Highly anticipated, the annual ASID Design
Excellence Awards event culminated this
year at The Phoenician Resort and Spa in Scottsdale,
Arizona. Past presidents were honored and winners
saluted during a festive black-­tie dinner. Residential
Best of Show and First Place Designs are presented on
the pages ahead. For additional information on this

Best of Show and Residence Under 3,500 Square Feet

TOM WATSON DESIGN
Collectible quality artwork, sculpture and pottery were incorporated
into a high-­end condo that needed to be made relaxing, masculine,
comfortable and personalized for its owner, a widower and art lover.
The design plan also included furnishings without sharp edges and a
sophisticated color palette. The audio-­visual area is clean and sim-­
ple, while lined silk draperies offer sun protection during the day and
privacy by night.

3. Kitchen -­ New or Remodeled

ASHLEY BARNES & ASSOCIATES
The goal in remodeling their client’s
1980s-­era kitchen was to modernize the
space while preserving the home’s original
character. To enlarge the footprint of the
room and create an open plan that would
accomodate a large island, the designers
borrow space from the adjacent powder
bath and dining room. Design elements
for the new kitchen include granite and
concrete countertops;; stained and painted
cabinets;; leaded-­glass doors;; reclaimed
stone backsplashes;; and stained tongue-­
and-­groove ceilings.
Special Function Spaces

EAST WEST INC.
Creating a “Princess Room” for a 6-­year-­old
girl meant commissioning a peronalized mu-­
ral for the walls and ceiling of her bedroom,
bathroom and closet;; designing a carriage-­
like bed hideaway complete with a stairway
to a loft;; and incorporating a custom desk
and window treatments.
