How long do you plan to live in your own home? As do most of us over 45-ers, you probably want to continue living independently for as long as possible. If you’re younger, you most likely have parents or close relatives who feel the same way. “Aging In Place” is a concept for modifying your home to accommodate age related physical and mental challenges that allows you to live safely, comfortably, and happily throughout your senior years.

Editor's Notes
Choices in flooring, cabinetry, and counter tops give your home a custom look.
Key West Dream has a strong character, and brings together several colors – red, black, white, gray
Contrary to conventional thought, a dark room painted a dark color will look larger. If you paint a dark room white, it will still look dark. An overall deep hue (including the ceiling) eliminates boundaries giving the impression of a larger space.
The materials for the master bedroom include the print quilt, soft coral wall color, and silk-like fabric for blackout roman shades. The master bedroom utilizes the client's existing furnishings. The beautiful curvilinear floral picks up the coral wall color, tan carpet, and walnut furniture, tieing all the elements together.
A neutral or monochromatic color palette with texture and pattern have as strong an impact as a colorful one. Here fabric, tile, and wallpaper combine to create elegance and sophistication, yet very livable and comfortable.
Color, texture and pattern create a rich, elegant, and sophisticated look
Coral is the perfect hue for a bright and happy guest bedroom with a paled down shade for the bath. The rest of the color palette in the one of my newer projects includes tomato red, white, green, and yellow.
Using a favorite color, a monochromatic color palette is restful to the eye and the psyche. Add interest with accessories.
Your home makes its first impression at the entry so it’s important to fashion an introductory space with an inviting atmosphere, and makes visitors feel welcome and at ease.
Not all homes have a generous amount of space. The smaller the space, the more creativity is required.
No interior design element affects the mood and atmosphere of a room more than paint because it covers such a large area. And although it's one of the least expensive elements of home design, people find color selection one of the most difficult choices.
Color sets the emotional tone of a room – red is energetic and exciting, yellow is happy, green and blue are peaceful.
The curved bay windows are enhanced by a curved sofa that fits under the window. Simple stationery window panels soften the design scheme and camouflage odd shaped windows while framing beautiful views of the golf course and ocean beyond. They seem to embrace the sofa, creating an intimate and welcoming atmosphere detached from the remaining space. The miniblinds, provided by the building, remain for light control of the southeastern exposure.
White kitchens are trending. Stainless has moved from contemporary status and now is a classic, suitable for any design style.
French door, (side-by-side) fridge and freezer eliminates bending
Stove controls in front of the appliance avoids reaching and burns
Cooktop surfaces have markings for pots, avoiding tipping over that can happen with conventional burners
Over the years, you’ve entertained lavishly, and probably have accumulated large collections of cooking and serving pieces in several styles and colors. But how much entertaining to you plan to do now? How many sets of dishes, glasses, pots, pans, etc do you actually need?
Today, many of us rely on the microwave, convection cooking, and prepared dishes that just need to warm and serve. If we have a party, it’s generally catered or held at a restaurant. The days of the large, full service kitchen are over.
Ask yourself, how much kitchen storage do I really need? Would I rather have space to create a cozy, functional, eat-in kitchen that accommodates 1-4 people for casual meals instead of using the dining room. I think you can sacrifice a few cabinets and drawers to create one.
In the galley kitchens provided by Vi at Aventura, I’ve several clients who opted to create an eat-in option in the kitchen.
Most of you recall the avocado-green and harvest-gold appliances. You might balk at using strong color on kitchen appliances. Sometime during the 1990s, stainless steel took over as the must-have finish for appliances. Next we started to camouflage refrigerators and dishwashers with panel fronts that matched the cabinetry. In typical fashion, now things are swinging back. Black and white are back, and some want their appliances to stand out. A wide range of appliance color options are now being offered by many manufacturers.
An open floor plan gives a feeling of expansiveness. I usually break up the space into a few intimate seating areas without destroying the feeling of openness. On the other hand, if you need more privacy, walls provide that needed separation. A third option is installing sliding walls that you can open or close as needed.
If you opt for privacy, smaller rooms in a dark, monochromatic color actually look larger than a light color or multi-hue color palette.
A work in progress, a small den is being transformed into a multi-tasking space: home office, library, guest room. The homeowner has a full service workspace, guests can gather in an intimate setting to watch tv, read, or chat; and guests can overnight in the sleep sofa.
