collaborate and work more effectively. Systems engineer,
Leigh Geary, discusses the key role of smartphones
in the evolving digital workplace.

research of various mobile devices and their functionalities, he has
gained a broad understanding of smartphones’ adaptability
within the work environment.

From Geary’s perspective,the core of the digital workplace
is an ability to provide individuals with mobile access and tools—wherever
they are. He’s had experience with network applications, such as Citrix, that
initially were developed for desktop use but since have been updated for use
across multiple devices. He also has enjoyed watching Outlook expand to
tablets and smartphones, another example of traditional software that was
upgraded with universal capabilities for all devices.

Many professionals just like Gearywork in po-
sitions that require frequent travel and remote company access. Natu-
rally, he appreciates the ability to travel as “light” as possible, without
briefcases brimming with heavy laptops that are becoming obsolete.
Let’s face it: carry-on space is limited and precious. Newer technology
has introduced tablets and mobile devices that contain the same func-
tionalities as older devices, but are more compact and include web-
based applications.
Geary believes digital work is developing in the direction of being per-
formed via a web connection. Take Office 365, for example—a web-
based platform with cloud access across multiple devices. This kind of
software advancement allows you to work on your office laptop, then
resume that same assignment right where you left off, whether you’re
in a car stuck in traffic, or in bed on your tablet.

Still, despite the increasing power to work remotely through a web
connection, Geary believes that people will continue to come to-
gether in one central workplace. Today, that can mean anything
from being able to connect virtually with colleagues via Skype, or
having the ability to pick up your lightweight device and sit down
with a team member in a separate department. This mobility en-
hances the work environment and produces seamless connec-
tions in contrast to the outdated, rigid cubicle work culture.
For example, when Geary recently visited Vodafone Headquarters,
he saw employees working around the entire company campus. He
notes that this shift is an integral part of collaboration, and reflects on
the technological advancements in mobile compatibility. According
to Geary, devices are replacing the traditional “heavy weight” desk-
top PC. Now workers can work together through a web window.

Although it is universally felt that everyone is connected through our
pocket devices, Geary notes that actual communication still can get lost.
For example, he sees Outlook mailboxes overwhelmed with incoming
emails, and the common follow-up question, ‘did you see my email?’
still chimes around the workplace. With the new developments, people
now can utilize a complementing application such as Skype to commu-
nicate, whether that’s through video, phone calls or messages. These
immediate connection options are tools that are critical to efficient and
cohesive communication between and within company departments.
Through his time specializing in the field, Geary states that he seen
the mobile phone transform into a modern productivity machine.
Recently, when he took a trip to cover the Mobile World Congress
in Barcelona, he brought nothing more than his phone and light-
weight laptop, and was able to access his office with ease.
