2. What does Health
disparities mean?
Health disparities refer to differences in the health status of
different groups of people.
What influences these groups?
• Race
• Ethnicity
• Immigrant status
• Disability
• Sex or gender
• Sexual orientation
• Geography
• Income
What groups does this affect?
It affects minority groups
including:
• Hispanics
• Blacks
• Native Americans
• Rural and economically
disadvantaged populations
3. Obese and Overweight health disparity:
• 42 percent of Latino adults
are obese compared with
32.6 percent of Whites
• 22.4 percent of Latino
children ages 2 to 19 are
obese, compared with 14.3
percent of White children.
• The obesity rates for
Latino children are much
higher starting at a young
age — for 2 to 5 year olds,
the rates are more than
quadruple those of Whites
(16.7 % compared with
3.5%).
• By ages 6 to 11, 26.1
percent of Latino children
are obese compared with
13.1 percent of Whites.
Almost three-quarters of
differences in the rates
between Latino and White
children happens by third
grade!
4. Poverty level:
Latinos vs Whites
• Nearly one in four Latino households
are considered food insecure,
compared with 11 percent of White
households.
• Median income for Hispanic
households ($42,491) is significantly
lower than their White, non-Hispanic
counterparts ($60,256).
• Poverty rates for Hispanics (24%)
were more than double that of non-
Hispanic Whites (10%).
• Over the past 30 years in the United
States, White families have earned $2 for
every $1 that Latino families earned.
5. When Latino families do not have enough
money for everyone to eat full and nutritious
meals, there is an increased risk of obesity,
more specifically, in CHILDREN.
Latino children consume higher amounts of
sugar-sweetened beverages than other children.
One study found that two out of every three
foods Latino children consumed included
pizza, chips, desserts, burgers or soda/juice.
Studies have shown:
cheaper food choice =Smaller budget= Less nutritious food =
higher prevalence in
overweight/ obese kids.
6. So our statistics display that Latinos are more
prevalent of being lower on the poverty line, so
how are they also more prevalent of being
overweight or obese compared to whites?
