Purpose of Job:
To promote good practice and effective learning throughout the school to meet the requirements of the National
Curriculum and to maximise the attainment of minority ethnic (ME) pupils and those for whom English is an additional
language (EAL)
To work in partnership with the school and class teachers to develop an inclusive curriculum which celebrates the
diversity of the school community and provides access to pupils at all stages of English language development
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. ASSESSMENT AND PRIORITISING NEED
Monitor the progress and attainment of ethnic minority pupils and those with English as an additional language
In collaboration with class teachers and school senior managers, identify and target pupils, manage the deployment of
support and review support arrangements regularly
Keep a record of supported pupils and monitor the impact of strategies/support on their learning
Co-ordinate the work of other EMAG-funded staff (currently a Bi-lingual Teaching Assistant)
2. TEACHING SUPPORT
Assess pupils’ English language development and learning needs in collaboration with class teachers
Contribute to class teachers’ planning in developing an inclusive curriculum which reflects the diversity of the school
community and identifies effective classroom strategies and teaching approaches to meet the needs of EAL pupils and
ME pupils at risk of underachieving
Provide in-class and out of class teaching support, including the development of appropriate resources, to ensure the
inclusion of EAL and ME pupils
Contribute to the assessment and induction of newly arrived pupils
Support class teachers in identifying and meeting the pastoral needs of EAL and ME pupils at risk of underachieving
3. CONTRIBUTING TO WHOLE SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
Work in collaboration with school senior managers to develop a whole school approach to minority ethnic
achievement
Work in collaboration with school senior managers to develop an EMAG Action Plan on the School Development Plan
which supports the school’s priorities and targets
Work in collaboration with school senior managers to review policy and practice in raising minority ethnic achievement
Plan and deliver INSET to enable staff to develop strategies and teaching approaches to meet the needs of EAL and ME
pupils
Advise and support staff in planning an inclusive curriculum which reflects the diversity of the school community and
meets the needs of EAL pupils
To source and co-ordinate the provision of translators as and when needed especially for End of KS2 Tests
