Badge/Logo
The Howard School badge has a stripyblackand yellow borderaroundit,thisgivesitaneye catching
effectbutas mostof theirlettersare printedinblackandwhite the eye catchingeffectislostandit
looksdull.The Anchorsuitsthe badge butthe flowerissimilartothe neighbouringgirl’sschool,this
suggeststhatthe two schoolsworktogetherbutas the HowardSchool is an all-boysschool,the
flowermaydeterpeople fromgoingthere.Itwouldlookbetterif the logowasjustthe anchor,just
one insteadof twoas it wouldgive the image of strength.Thiswouldbe goodasstrengthisneeded
because the HowardSchool callsitself aspecialistsportscollege. The badge ontheirnewsletteris
reasonablysmall sothereforeitdoesn’tdomuchwhere it couldactuallydomore. The RobertNapier
School has a simplerlogowhichisnotas attractive;itisa curvedshieldwithatorchlike the Olympic
flame inside of it.
Prospectus
The front of theirprospectusisplainanddull,the colourisnot veryattractive andthere isa large
space of emptyonthe front.The imagesare not presentedtidily,itlooksasif the imageshave just
beenplacedthere randomlyoverlappingeachotherandtheydon’tevenshow animage of the
school itself.Asyouopenthe prospectusthe same messyimage layoutisseenagain,overlappingit
isa fingerprintgraphicwithwordsrelatingtosubjectstaughtatthe Howard School.
The school visionstatement“ToStrive andAchieve istoSucceed”isshowninthe topleftinside the
prospectus.Itisn’tlarge andtherefore ismissingapowerful effect,howeveratthe bottomleftitis
clearlyseenthatpagesare numberedwhichmeansthe prospectusisorganised,howeverthere are
actuallyonly7 pages.
Inside,page 3 explainswhatthe school isandexplainsitself whichissomethingthatisimportant.
Pages4 and5 explainthe aimsof the school andwhythe school shouldbe chosenforstudents,itis
alsoexplainedhowstandardsare beingraisedandlistwhatstudentscanexpecttoreceive suchas
homework.Page 6describesthe activitiesandequipmentprovidedandwhatopportunitiesare
available,thisisimportantasthe longerthe listis,the more interestingitsoundstoreaders.
Theytheninclude the historyof the school,thisis of interesttosome people butitisnotimportant
and isn’tactuallynecessarytoinclude.The visionstatementisclearlyexplainedandthenafterthat
the gradesare shown,theyalsoinclude the previous year’sresultstoshow thattheyhave improved,
thismakesparentsthinktheyare goingto continue toimprove whichisakeyaspectof the
prospectus.Facilitiesandlearningsupportinformationisincludedwhichhelpsthe parentsknow if
the school can meettheirneeds.
The staff listis included,thisisimportantandinformative,the reasonforthisisitclearlystatesthe
namesof teachersineach departmentsoif a studentneedstoknow whoto askabout a particular
subjecttheycan findthe teacherinthat department;thisalsoworksforparents withconcerns.The
back ispartiallyemptyandonce againthe imagesfocuson activitiesratherthanfacilities.

The Robert NapierSchool prospectushasafar simplerbutneaterlayout,itissimple andusesa
varietyof bluesandwhite asthe background,the textisfar spacedout whichmakesiteasiertoread
and itis largerhoweverthe prospectuslacksthe use of large images.
Website
The Howard School website isclearlylaidoutwithdifferentmenuheadingswithsubmenustoaccess
differentpartsof the website.Toexplainthismore clearly,the menuiswhatcontainsthe headings
overhead,the submenusare whatbranchoff to other pagessowhenthe mouse cursermovesover
the menuheadingthe submenuappearswithaselectionof pagesrelatingtothe menuheading.
There isa sectionforthe HowardSchool whichcontainsthe history,calendar,results,information
aboutthe school andwhat itoffersandanythingelse relatingtothe school.
There isanothersubmenufor students;thisincludesinformationforstudentssuchasafterschool
clubs, careers advice andexaminformationwhichcanbe helpfultostudents.There isalsoa
submenuforparentsandcarers which informsthemaboutthingssuchas termdatesand advice on
howtheymay be able to helpthe students.
The website hasa calendarpage whichdoesnotinclude examtimes,thisisannoyingaspeople
couldendup lookinghere forthe examtimesandtheymayforgetthatthere isan exampartof the
website.Anotherproblemisthatall the examdatesare releasedtogether;all the dateshave tobe
confirmedbefore theyuploadthe dates,andtherefore itispossible thatsome of the datescould
have alreadypassedwhichwouldnotbe anygood.Finallythere isaseparate sectiononthe website
for staff whichinformsthemonhowto resolve issuessuchasfaultylogins.
The Robert NapierSchool website isfarplainerbutithasmore attractive featuressuchas the
dynamicpictureswhichchange like aslide show andthe scrollingtextwhichinformsof updates.Just
like the HowardSchool site there are differentsectionheadingsforthe differentpartsof the
website.
Newsletter
The newsletterinformsinboldthe datesthatparentsandcarers needtoknow,thisgetsthe
importantthingsdeliveredrightawaysoif theygethalfwaythrough the firstpage and putit down
because of boredom,if the datesare at the backtheywouldnotget seen.Thereforethisisagood
thingto do sothat importantthingsare seen. The keyhighlightsare thenshownsuchas
appointmentof headboy.Informationfor6th
formersisthenshown.There are only2 pagesand it is
pure information,itwouldbe more interestingif theyincludedmore contentinthe newsletter.
Issuessuchas examsandthe weathersituationsare listedon the secondpage,althoughsmallthe
newslettergivesthe importantinformationthatpeople needtoknow.Thisisa goodstrategybut
couldbe made more interesting.
The Robert NapierSchool newsletterusesavarietyof differentimages,differentfontsand colours
to make it lookeye-catching;ithasmanysectionsaboutthe differentactivitiesthathave beendone
and ismuch more attractive thanthe HowardSchool newsletter.Howeverthe importantdatesare
at the backof the newsletterwhichmeanslesspeoplewill see it.
