The document evaluates the effectiveness of combining a music video with ancillary tasks like a digipak and magazine advert. It finds the combination is very effective because using consistent colors, fonts, imagery and themes across the products helps viewers easily recognize them as being related. Specific techniques used included a black and orange color scheme, photos of the artist with the signature sunburst guitar, and fairy lights featured in both the digipak and advert. While the brand identity is strong, it could be strengthened even more by including the female actor's photo in the digipak or editing techniques on the video.
2. Question 2: How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary tasks?
• The main product is a music video and the ancillary tasks are the digipak
and magazine advert.
• It is extremely important to have an effective combination in the main
product and ancillary tasks. This is because it is important that the viewer
can easily make a recognition between the products. If the viewer can
easily make a connection between the digipak this means that they are
more likely to recognise the product and purchase it.
• The overall theme for my product is love; this is portrayed and
complimented by the use of the colours in the ancillary tasks. In the music
video this theme is portrayed through the artists within the video. The
actors within the video are shown to be in love with each other.
• The house style that is present throughout my ancillary task is a warm
acoustic feel that matches the music video’s theme. The same font and
colour scheme has been used throughout the digipak and magazine advert
to create a link between them. Within my media product there are certain
elements that relate back to the ancillary tasks. The brand identity from
my product is the focus into the raw acoustic music and how it is made,
when the customer thinks of Jamie Lawson they think of a raw acoustic
sound that he creates in his songs, this is represented by the guitar on the
front of the digipak. The warm natural lights also help with portraying the
calm natural image that is presented in his songs.
3. • Throughout the production of my media product I ensured that the
continuity between the main task and ancillary tasks was professional
and consistent. The first simple but effective method that I used
was using the same colours throughout the products. In my digipak and
magazine advert I chose a black theme (6) to form the base of all the
products. This was enhanced by the orange detailing in which was
added to the font and titles to create a ‘sunburst’ finish (6). This was
done to compliment the sunburst guitar that was used by the artist in
the music video (7) this was the first way in which I could make a link
between the products to ensure that they were easily distinguished as
one, creating an easily recognisable brand image.

5. • The next way in which I ensured that the tasks linked was
through the use of the artist and actors. For example, the
digipak shows the artist in two places as a result of this the
viewer can instantly see that the digipak links to the music
video, furthermore the artists can be seen on the digipak and
advert as there were pictures taken of them with the guitar,
furthermore I have also included fairy lights in both the
ancillary tasks. The fairy lights that can be seen in the digipak
wrapped around the guitar which is used by the artist in the
music video are also used in the magazine advert . This made
an effective digipak as it makes sure the viewer is aware that
it belongs to the video which could in turn increase sales of
the media product.
6. • The final way in which I made sure the links between my main
product and ancillary products was through the use of consistent
fonts. Font type sizes and colour were all made identical (8) in
order to ensure that the media product was seamless and easily
recognisable as one product. I used this style as I felt it accurately
captured the mood of the music video. The writing style also has
connotations with love which is the theme of the video in which I
was trying to develop. The theme that I tried to create was a dark
mysterious but love filled theme. This was done with the use of a
black background and a soft orange to yellow glow around the
edges, this gives the digipak and magazine advert a warm loving
mood and theme. This matches the mood and atmosphere that is
created by the original song.
7. • There are areas of my work which could have been
improved in order to further increase the brand
identity. For example, I should have included a picture
of the female actor in the digipak; this is because this
would be another element that the viewers may
remember to make them mentally link the two
products together. Furthermore I could have edited the
video to make the video in black and white but the
guitar in colour, this would create a link between the
colours used in the digipak. This is because I replicated
the guitars sunburst finish in the digipak background
and fonts.
8. • The product has a strong brand identity as a
whole however after review I believe that there
are areas in which can be made stronger with
some alterations. I think that the digipak could
contain a picture of the female actor that was
used for the video as this another way that they
could be linked with the music video, and finally I
could have added more close up shots of the
artists in relatable famous location to help people
recognise the music video.
