Primary Care Nurse practitioner (NP) Role vs. APN Roles
Compare the primary care NP role with other APN roles. What
are the similarities among the roles, what are the differences,
and how would you communicate the role to a healthcare
provider and a consumer?
The advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) has different
roles and responsibilities that nurses can undertake depending
on the nature of their training. An APRN can also be referred to
as a nurse practitioner (NP). There are other designated roles
other than the NP such as the clinical nurse specialist (CNS),
the certified nurse-midwives (CNM), and certified registered
nurse anesthetists (CRNA) (Everett et al., 2016). These roles
have similarities and differences and many cases of overlapping
responsibilities and in some cases, the need for collaboration to
achieve the desired patient outcomes. The primary care NP is a
specific role within the purview of NPs in which the provider is
a general practitioner without any specialty training (Butler et
al., 2017). The NP has roles such as completing patient
assessments including conducting a physical examination. The
primary care NP can also undertake diagnostic approaches such
as ordering lab works and imaging procedures and providing
appropriate interpretation. The NP can provide treatment and
monitoring of the patient and also provide health education and
other primary prevention measures.
One similarity of the role of primary NP to other APRN roles is
that they have the scope to conduct independent patient
assessments. All roles of the APRN have the scope of taking the
patient's history, conducting a proper physical exam, and
ensuring an appropriate differential diagnosis (Phillips, 2016).
The APRN has completed competencies in the assessment of the
patient and he/she can use these competencies to determine and
fulfill patient needs. Another similarity of the role of the
primary care NP to other APRNs is the role of providing patient
education, mentoring, and advocating for the needs of the
patient (Hanks et al., 2018). Each APRN has a responsibility to
empower the patient by providing health education about their
condition or the treatment process to support their autonomy.
The patient is the primary decision-maker in the clinical area
and providing them with education supports their ability to
make proper healthcare decisions.
The role of the primary care NP is different from the role of
certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) in the sense of
anesthesia and pain management. The CRNA is a specialist in
pre, intra and post-operative pain and anesthesia management
and this is a role that the NP does not have scope for (Butler et
al., 2017). The NP does not get involved in surgery and does
referrals to required specialists for that care to be mediated. The
primary care NP role is also different from the role of
the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) whose primary role is quality
improvement and patient safety in the clinical/hospital
environment (Everett et al., 2016). The certified nurse-
midwives (CNM) also exclusively care for women in their
prenatal, delivery, and postnatal period and cannot provide care
to patients with general health issues as an NP would.
The role of each APRN can be communicated to the public by
specifically mentioning the area of practice for the practitioner
when advertising services. Notice to the public such as “primary
care Nurse practitioner” would suggest to the public that the NP
provides primary care services. It is important to denote the
type of service each provider gives to avoid confusion of the
consumers of these services. For example, a certified nurse-
midwife (CNM) should indicate that he/she provides midwifery
services to ensure that those seeking midwifery services and
prenatal and postnatal care can access the right practitioners. To
healthcare providers, I can provide notice of practice scope on
my online and outdoor platforms to ensure there is a general
awareness of my services among local care providers. It is
important to incorporate the training of the roles of APRNs
among healthcare workers to influence understanding and
proper interdisciplinary practice.

Primary Care NP Role vs. APN Roles
There are various similarities and differences between nurse
practitioners (NPs) roles and advanced practice nurse (APNs)
roles. The roles of NPs include diagnosing patients, screening,
and treating critical and chronic diseases, and managing medical
situations (Lowe et al, 2012). APN roles include nurse midwife,
clinical nurse specialist (CNS), as well as certified registered
nurse anesthetist (CRNA). To begin, the roles of the nurse-
midwife include the provision of prenatal and postnatal care,
coordination of care to ensure holistic, voluntary, and social
services for pregnant women, leadership in planning. Nurse
midwives are educators, counselors, and supervisors (Mona,
2016). A clinical nurse specialist performs assessments,
diagnoses, treats patients, and engages in healthcare
management and research (Brennan, 2021). The roles of a
certified registered nurse anesthetist include administration of
pain medications, moderate sedation, and analgesics during,
before, and after surgery, management of patient’s recovery
from anesthesia, and constant monitoring of the patient before
and after surgery (Mayo Clinic, 2021). Generally, as provided
by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2006),
advanced nursing practice entails an organizational and
leadership component that guarantees patient safety, continuous
improvement of health outcomes, as well as the practice of care.
As seen in the roles highlighted above, the similarities between
the NP role and the CNS role are that both engage in the
assessment and screening diagnosis and treatment of patients.
This is a critical aspect of primary care delivery. The similarity
between the NP roles and the nurse-midwife role is that they
both screen and consequently manage their patients (Mona,
2016). NPs roles, on the other hand, are focused on the entire
population while nurse midwives mainly deal with pregnant
women. Lastly, NP roles are similar to CRNA roles in terms of
their involvement in close monitoring of their patients. The
CRNA would assess patients before, during, and after surgery
while NP roles entail the assessment and constant monitoring of
patient status.
Differences abound between the NP role and the APN roles. For
instance, the NP role differs from the midwife role in the sense
that while the NP handles patients with varied conditions, nurse
midwives specifically manage pregnant women and offer both
antenatal and postnatal care. Additionally, the NP role differs
from the CNS role in the sense that CNS has roles in leadership
and research, which is not directly available for NPs (Brennan,
2021). Lastly, the NP role differs from the CRNA role because
CRNA nurses are mainly limited to anesthesia in areas such as
surgical suites, obstetrical delivery rooms, dentist offices, and
ambulatory surgical centers, while the NP role comes with
flexibility in terms of the patients they handle.
Communicating the NP role and the APN roles to both providers
and consumers is critical. A proper method to communicate the
roles of NP and APNs providers could be done by highlighting
the academic credentials and the general scope of practice to the
patients. This communication can be done through collaborative
professional meetings and conferences with providers indicating
the specific roles of NP as well as APNs. Interprofessional
primary care team meetings are an essential platform to
effectively communicate the roles (van Dongen et.al., 2017).
Communication of the roles to patients could also be done
through direct explanations to each patient before the delivery
of services. The nurse could take the initiative to explain
his/her roles resulting in good rapport and a trusting
relationship between the patient and NP. Lastly, communication
could take place through the organizatio n’s website where
consumers have access, and diligently explain the NPs roles to
make them aware of what to expect when they come to the
healthcare setting. The overall outcome would be a clear
understanding of what to expect from nurses in the course and
continuum of care.

Dwayne Mitchell St Thomas University NUR 512 Dr. Teran,Doris Primary Care Nurse practitioner (NP) Role vs. APN Roles Compare the primary care NP role with other APN roles. What are the similarities among the roles, what are the differences, and how would you communicate the role to a healthcare provider and a consumer? The advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) has different roles and responsibilities that nurses can undertake depending on the nature of their training. An APRN can also be referred to as a nurse practitioner (NP). There are other designated roles other than the NP such as the clinical nurse specialist (CNS), the certified nurse-midwives (CNM), and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) (Everett et al., 2016). These roles have similarities and differences and many cases of overlapping responsibilities and in some cases, the need for collaboration to achieve the desired patient outcomes. The primary care NP is a specific role within the purview of NPs in which the provider is a general practitioner without any specialty training (Butler et al., 2017). The NP has roles such as completing patient assessments including conducting a physical examination. The primary care NP can also undertake diagnostic approaches such as ordering lab works and imaging procedures and providing appropriate interpretation. The NP can provide treatment and monitoring of the patient and also provide health education and
  • 2. other primary prevention measures. One similarity of the role of primary NP to other APRN roles is that they have the scope to conduct independent patient assessments. All roles of the APRN have the scope of taking the patient's history, conducting a proper physical exam, and ensuring an appropriate differential diagnosis (Phillips, 2016). The APRN has completed competencies in the assessment of the patient and he/she can use these competencies to determine and fulfill patient needs. Another similarity of the role of the primary care NP to other APRNs is the role of providing patient education, mentoring, and advocating for the needs of the patient (Hanks et al., 2018). Each APRN has a responsibility to empower the patient by providing health education about their condition or the treatment process to support their autonomy. The patient is the primary decision-maker in the clinical area and providing them with education supports their ability to make proper healthcare decisions. The role of the primary care NP is different from the role of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) in the sense of anesthesia and pain management. The CRNA is a specialist in pre, intra and post-operative pain and anesthesia management and this is a role that the NP does not have scope for (Butler et al., 2017). The NP does not get involved in surgery and does referrals to required specialists for that care to be mediated. The primary care NP role is also different from the role of the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) whose primary role is quality improvement and patient safety in the clinical/hospital environment (Everett et al., 2016). The certified nurse- midwives (CNM) also exclusively care for women in their prenatal, delivery, and postnatal period and cannot provide care to patients with general health issues as an NP would. The role of each APRN can be communicated to the public by specifically mentioning the area of practice for the practitioner when advertising services. Notice to the public such as “primary care Nurse practitioner” would suggest to the public that the NP provides primary care services. It is important to denote the
  • 3. type of service each provider gives to avoid confusion of the consumers of these services. For example, a certified nurse- midwife (CNM) should indicate that he/she provides midwifery services to ensure that those seeking midwifery services and prenatal and postnatal care can access the right practitioners. To healthcare providers, I can provide notice of practice scope on my online and outdoor platforms to ensure there is a general awareness of my services among local care providers. It is important to incorporate the training of the roles of APRNs among healthcare workers to influence understanding and proper interdisciplinary practice. References Butler, D. (2017). Primary Care NP Role vs. APN Roles There are various similarities and differences between nurse practitioners (NPs) roles and advanced practice nurse (APNs) roles. The roles of NPs include diagnosing patients, screening, and treating critical and chronic diseases, and managing medical situations (Lowe et al, 2012). APN roles include nurse midwife, clinical nurse specialist (CNS), as well as certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). To begin, the roles of the nurse- midwife include the provision of prenatal and postnatal care, coordination of care to ensure holistic, voluntary, and social services for pregnant women, leadership in planning. Nurse midwives are educators, counselors, and supervisors (Mona, 2016). A clinical nurse specialist performs assessments, diagnoses, treats patients, and engages in healthcare management and research (Brennan, 2021). The roles of a certified registered nurse anesthetist include administration of pain medications, moderate sedation, and analgesics during, before, and after surgery, management of patient’s recovery from anesthesia, and constant monitoring of the patient before and after surgery (Mayo Clinic, 2021). Generally, as provided by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2006), advanced nursing practice entails an organizational and leadership component that guarantees patient safety, continuous improvement of health outcomes, as well as the practice of care. As seen in the roles highlighted above, the similarities between
  • 5. the NP role and the CNS role are that both engage in the assessment and screening diagnosis and treatment of patients. This is a critical aspect of primary care delivery. The similarity between the NP roles and the nurse-midwife role is that they both screen and consequently manage their patients (Mona, 2016). NPs roles, on the other hand, are focused on the entire population while nurse midwives mainly deal with pregnant women. Lastly, NP roles are similar to CRNA roles in terms of their involvement in close monitoring of their patients. The CRNA would assess patients before, during, and after surgery while NP roles entail the assessment and constant monitoring of patient status. Differences abound between the NP role and the APN roles. For instance, the NP role differs from the midwife role in the sense that while the NP handles patients with varied conditions, nurse midwives specifically manage pregnant women and offer both antenatal and postnatal care. Additionally, the NP role differs from the CNS role in the sense that CNS has roles in leadership and research, which is not directly available for NPs (Brennan, 2021). Lastly, the NP role differs from the CRNA role because CRNA nurses are mainly limited to anesthesia in areas such as surgical suites, obstetrical delivery rooms, dentist offices, and ambulatory surgical centers, while the NP role comes with flexibility in terms of the patients they handle. Communicating the NP role and the APN roles to both providers and consumers is critical. A proper method to communicate the roles of NP and APNs providers could be done by highlighting the academic credentials and the general scope of practice to the patients. This communication can be done through collaborative professional meetings and conferences with providers indicating the specific roles of NP as well as APNs. Interprofessional primary care team meetings are an essential platform to effectively communicate the roles (van Dongen et.al., 2017). Communication of the roles to patients could also be done through direct explanations to each patient before the delivery of services. The nurse could take the initiative to explain

Lastly, communication could take place through the organizatio n’s website where consumers have access, and diligently explain the NPs roles to make them aware of what to expect when they come to the healthcare setting. The overall outcome would be a clear understanding of what to expect from nurses in the course and continuum of care. References American Association of Colleges of Nursing. (2006).
