Museum deficits are history

STURBRIDGE — Old Sturbridge Village is back in the black.

For the first time in a decade, the famed American history museum has ended its fiscal year without a deficit.
In addition, the village posted attendance gains for the second straight year and has increased visitation by 8 percent since 2008.

“The museum industry has been challenged, especially in the last year with the economy,” OSV President and CEO James E. Donahue said.
“We feel very fortunate to report these results.”

For the museum’s fiscal year ending Jan. 30, donations grew by 25 percent from the previous year, from $1,380,535 to $1,721,689;
attendance increased by 2 percent, from 239,028 to 244,008; and field trip visits increased by 5 percent, from 64,800 to 67,823.

Old Sturbridge Village’s revenue for 2009 was up, driven largely by the fundraising increase. Expenses were down by approximately $800,000,
the result of a cost-reduction plan implemented in January 2009. OSV’s net improvement for the year was more than $1 million, resulting in an
operating surplus for the first time in a decade.

  • 4. Old Sturbridge Village rebounds Museum deficits are history Thursday, March 25, 2010 By Craig S. Semon TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF STURBRIDGE — Old Sturbridge Village is back in the black. For the first time in a decade, the famed American history museum has ended its fiscal year without a deficit. In addition, the village posted attendance gains for the second straight year and has increased visitation by 8 percent since 2008. “The museum industry has been challenged, especially in the last year with the economy,” OSV President and CEO James E. Donahue said. “We feel very fortunate to report these results.” For the museum’s fiscal year ending Jan. 30, donations grew by 25 percent from the previous year, from $1,380,535 to $1,721,689; attendance increased by 2 percent, from 239,028 to 244,008; and field trip visits increased by 5 percent, from 64,800 to 67,823. Old Sturbridge Village’s revenue for 2009 was up, driven largely by the fundraising increase. Expenses were down by approximately $800,000, the result of a cost-reduction plan implemented in January 2009. OSV’s net improvement for the year was more than $1 million, resulting in an operating surplus for the first time in a decade.
