  2. In this photo are Beatrice Ndorongo, (pronounced “n’rongo”) the principal of Gakawa Secondary School in Nanyuki, Kenya. She’s an amazing woman, head of an amazing school with wonderful kids. To her left is Tabitha Wanjiku Kieru, a 17-year-old student. That mast behind them may look insignificant, but it’s changed their lives. And the lives of an entire community. At the top of the mast is a microwave receiver. Below that, a satellite dish. Below that lies the real magic. It’s a Wi-Fi antenna – much like the one you have at home. But this antenna, with the help of underutilized broadcast bandwidth, can beam Wi-Fi for 10 miles in any direction. That’s roughly the distance from the women in this picture to the hill in the distance. This technology, known as TV white spaces, is also reliable and inexpensive.  And it’s changing the lives of students like Tabitha in schools like Gakawa and beyond. It means Tabitha and her friends can access the wealth of information on the Internet and graduate for University because of it. The school improved its results from a mean score 2.95 in 2013 to 3.46 in 2014 – which Beatrice attributes to this connectivity as students now don't have to relay fully on text books and gather more information from the Internet through the lab that was donated by Microsoft. It means that down the street, Benson Maina can run an Internet café from a shipping container where farmers research crop prices on the Internet and Chris Baraka earns a living online as a writer, while training others to do the same. Mawingu means cloud in Swahili. It’s also the name of a small group of entrepreneurs who partnered with Microsoft to deploy TV White Spaces technology to bring the Internet to the region. While others consider floating balloons or flying drones to bring Internet access to the world, Microsoft is doing it today: Over 200k people across five continents and 15 countries are now connected because of this technology. Microsoft’s core mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. The next wave of computing is already taking shape around us – from smart devices and sensors that can speak, listen and action with the power of AI, all the way to compute enabled in remote parts of the globe – without requiring “always on” connectivity to the cloud to make real-time, context-aware decisions.
