10. Matthew 3:1-2
1 In those days John the
Baptist came preaching in
the wilderness of Judea, 2
“Repent, for the kingdom of
heaven is at hand.”
11. Which is your typical response to
awareness of sin: repentance or
remorse?
12. Matthew 3:11-12
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance,
but he who is coming after me is mightier than
I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He
will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with
fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and
he will clear his threshing floor and gather his
wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn
with unquenchable fire.
13. Matthew 3:13-15
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the
Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14
John would have prevented him, saying, “I
need to be baptized by you, and do you
come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him,
“Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us
to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he
consented.
14. Matthew 3:16-17
16 And when Jesus was baptized,
immediately he went up from the water,
and behold, the heavens were opened to
him, and he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and coming to rest
on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven
said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I
am well pleased.”
15. How do you typically picture God’s
posture towards you?
16. Matthew 4:1-2
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into
the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 And after fasting forty days and forty
nights, he was hungry.
17.
18. Matthew 4:1-2
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into
the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 And after fasting forty days and forty
nights, he was hungry.
19. Matthew 4:3-4
3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If
you are the Son of God, command these
stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he
answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live
by bread alone, but by every word that
comes from the mouth of God.’”
21. Matthew 4:5-7
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city
and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6
and said to him, “If you are the Son of God,
throw yourself down, for it is written, ‘He
will command his angels concerning you,’
and ‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” 7
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You
shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
22. Where are you currently
tempted to distrust God in
His expression of His nature
and trustworthiness?
23. Matthew 4:8-11
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high
mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of
the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him,
“All these I will give you, if you will down and
worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be
gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall
worship the Lord your God and him only shall
you serve.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and
behold, angels came and were ministering to
him.
24. Where are you currently
tempted to distrust God
as the only God?
25. 1 Corinthians 10:13
13 No temptation has overtaken you that is
not common to man. God is faithful, and he
will not let you be tempted beyond your
ability, but with the temptation he will also
provide the way of escape, that you may be
able to endure it.
26. Hebrews 4:15-16
15 For we do not have a high priest who is
unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,
but one who in every respect has been
tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let
us then with confidence draw near to the
throne of grace, that we may receive mercy
and find grace to help in time of need.
27. From where do you draw your confidence
to approach the throne of grace?
Editor's Notes
Since Genesis 3 we have been promised a Redeemer, One who will come and restore all things…
Have seen over and over people that we think might be Him but are proven time and again that they are not
Here we see Christ, finally after 400 years of silence (we felt a LITTLE tiny bit of this in our reading plan!)
Matthew’s three goals:
Jesus is Messiah from the line of David
New Moses (new authoritative teacher)
God with us (Emmanuel)
John the Baptist – strange clothes (garment of camel’s hair), he is the promised “Elijah” that Malachi speaks of who will come before the great and awesome day of the LORD
Message is “repent”…the One you have been waiting for all this time is here!!
First command of John & Jesus
Repent vs. remorse
For: the proper and fitting response to the kingdom (God’s display of His sovereignty in the redemption of His people) is REPENTANCE…
The enemy is fine with remorse as long as we don’t repent
John’s baptism…points towards the baptism of Christ…
John’s baptism can’t remove our main problem (sin) or impart our main resource (Holy Spirit)…people coming and confessing/openly admitting their sin…willingness to move towards the message of Christ that is coming
He will baptize you…HE HIMSELF…Matthew 1:21 call him Jesus, for HE HIMSELF will save his people from their sins…NOT SAVED FROM the Romans, discomfort, suffering, etc.
Christ’s baptism given to those who are saved as a sign of actual salvation/transformation, receiving the Holy Spirit and forgiveness through Christ
To be baptized by him…WHAT? Upside down kingdom…
Jesus has nothing to repent of!
Fulfill all righteousness: Jesus is IDENTIFYING with us, which is what He’ll do for His entire ministry…
Humbles Himself, takins on a servant’s nature…ENTERS INTO THE WATERS NOT THAT HE NEEDS BUT THAT WE NEED…WILL ONE DAY BE ON A CROSS NOT THAT HE NEEDS BUT THAT WE NEEDED
He is doing what we can’t do for ourselves…He is identifying with us
Ends His ministry on a cross between thieves and begins it in a river among sinners…HE WHO HAD NO SIN TOOK HIS PLACE AMONG THOSE WHO HAD NO RIGHTEOUSNESS (John MacArthur) GOD WITH US
Isaiah 53:12 …because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors
Heavens opened to him: has access, heavens open to Him…
Spirit descending like a dove: God’s divine pleasure resting on Him…Spirit hovering over the face of the waters (Gen. 1:2)…new creation!!
Identity confirmed…He is beloved Son of God, and God is well pleased with Him…
When we become believers, this applies to us…our salvation means the heavens are open to us and the divine pleasure of God descends upon us, and we receive affirmed identity (NOT JUST “MY KID WITH WHOM I PUT UP WITH BUT AM USUALLY DISAPPOINTED IN”…
For a long time I thought He had saved me but was really disappointed in me and really just put up with me more than anything…NO!! I AM IN CHRIST…MY IDENTITY AND HIS PLEASURE IN ME COME FROM THE FACT THAT I AM IN CHRIST, NOT SOME MERIT OF MY OWN
So with baptism He is proclaimed King, with temptation He is proven King…WE HAVE SEEN MANY OTHERS COME BEFORE WHO HAVE FAILED THE TEST
More going on here than just a story about how we, too, can avoid temptation…
Been taught that all you need in order to stand firm in temptation is just to quote scripture
Satan does that too! Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word) isn’t about just knowing/quoting scripture but the fact that scripture introduces us to GOD HIMSELF…through scripture we learn His nature, that He is trustworthy, faithful, good, perfect in everything…
Going to look first at what this passage says about the nature of God (fulfiller of promises in Christ) and THEN how it should change us
From the Bible Project
Deliver from slavery
Give new divine teaching
Save from sins
Initiate a new covenant (where He fulfills the law and gives the new covenant where the law will be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path)
Wilderness: Israel disobeys, Christ fulfills all righteousness
How I used to view this passage:
Not that hard, He’s God: JESUS WAS TEMPTED AT THE FULL EXTENT, TO THE FURTHEST DEGREE ON THE SCALE
Only three temptations? I could handle that: CONTRAST WITH THE FIRST ADAM…PERFECT SETTING AND STILL SINNED
These don’t seem all that tempting to me…: ASKS THE QUESTION “Do you seek to glorify yourself or will you glorify Your Father in heaven?”
Will see that Jesus is intent on giving glory to the Father…I HAVE COME TO DO THE WILL OF HIM WHO SENT ME
Hungry: fully God, fully man…tempted in every way AS WE ARE and yet without sin
If you are the Son of God: you’re a Christian…you deserve better…tempted to distrust the nature of God…Adam & Eve: DID GOD REALLY SAY…
Loaves of bread: Israel’s first thing in the wilderness? Grumbling about provision…
PROVIDE FOR YOURSELF VS I CAN TRUST GOD TO PROVIDE
Every word that comes: God is trustworthy; His nature is trustworthy…REGARDLESS OF WHAT MY CURRENT EXPERIENCES MIGHT SAY
Why it’s so important for us to know Him AS HE PROCLAIMS HIMSELF IN HIS WORD…when testing/temptations comes, I will be forced to believe Him or believe a lie
Who do you trust? Who speaks the truth?
First temptation: tempted in a weakness
The plan I created at work with no credit...
WHAT'S A WEAKNESS THAT IS VULNERABLE TO AN ATTACK?
Jesus gets right to the point…devil is asking Him to prove that He trusts God
This time playing towards a strength…he does that with us too…a place we feel like we won’t be tempted…
Satan’s use of quoting Psalm 91 is exactly opposite of the original meaning, which was an exhortation to trust in God!!
Gideon
Keeps placing a set of demands on God where God is supposed to prove that He’s trustworthy
Gideon never grows in his assurance that God can be trusted as long as he is telling God the terms by which he will trust Him
Ultimately God sets the terms by which His trust will be revealed
Shall not put the Lord your God to the test: said differently, YOU SHALL NOT TRY TO MANIPULATE THE LORD YOUR GOD
Praying in Jesus’ name
If you ___, then I will _____
If I _____ (live a righteous life), then You have to ______ (bring me only comfort and ease and never any suffering)
Want God on my own terms
Struggle with kids...why me...I've "been good"
WHAT'S A PLACE WHERE YOU FEEL INVINCIBLE?
You can be the big deal, it can be about you…
There is another way to get glory, a way that doesn’t require the cross…
Jesus responds with a proclamation that there is only One True God…no other gods before Me…ISRAEL’S BIG ISSUE
Israel has failed here over and over…golden calf
So Jesus comes to the testing in the wilderness and fulfills all righteousness…the nature of our God is that He fulfills that which He promises…He can be trusted…
Control, approval, power, comfort
True community...uncomfortable to let people in...asking for prayer and how that's difficult for m
Piper: tempting/testing…all temptations are tests of faith, all tests are temptations to distrust God (includes “temptations” and “tests” like sickness, loss of job, etc.)
Paul’s argument rests on the faithful nature of God
Way of escape = escape from a sinful response, a distrust of God, an attempt to glorify self…
Able to endure = God’s provision doesn’t always mean removal from them…
Psalm 66:10-12 For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried. You brought us into the net; you laid a crushing burden on our backs; you let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.
How is silver refined? It is purified, the dross is taken away…
Based on the faithful and trustworthy nature of our God, and Jesus who came to do the will of the Father, we can withstand temptation…IN CHRIST…
