3. 1 Corinthians 9:23
Paul’s Goal
I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I
may share with them in its blessings.
4. Matthew 22:37-40
Paul’s Motivation
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind. This is the great and first commandment.
And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as
yourself. On these two commandments depend all the
Law and the Prophets.
5. 1 Corinthians 9:19
For though I am free from all, I have
made myself a servant to all, that I might
win more of them.
6. 1 Corinthians 9:20
To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order
to win Jews. To those under the law I
became as one under the law (though
not being myself under the law) that I
might win those under the law.
7. 1 Corinthians 9:21
To those outside the law I became as one
outside the law (not being outside the
law of God but under the law of Christ)
that I might win those outside the law.
8. 1 Corinthians 9:22
To the weak I became weak, that I might
win the weak. I have become all things
to all people, that by all means I might
save some.
9. Where do you tend to land these days?
No connection to the world
Too much like the world
10. Some questions to consider…
Are you becoming more worldly minded than
they are becoming spiritually minded?
Is your passion for winning friends and family
growing, or is it shrinking as you become all
things to them?
11. 1 Corinthians 9:23
Paul’s Goal
I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I
may share with them in its blessings.
12. 1 Corinthians 9:24
Do you not know that in a race all the
runners run, but only one receives the
prize? So run that you may obtain it.
13. 1 Corinthians 9:25
Every athlete exercises self-control in all
things. They do it to receive a perishable
wreath, but we an imperishable.
14. When you think of the people God
has placed in your race, what rights
to self do you need to give up in
order to be the witness He has called
you to be?
15. 1 Corinthians 9:26-27
So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as
one beating the air. But I discipline my
body and keep it under control, lest after
preaching to others I myself should be
disqualified.
16. Where in your life has complacency
or spiritual laziness slipped in?
17. 1 Corinthians 10:31
So, whether you eat or drink, or
whatever you do, do all to the glory of
God.
18. 1 Corinthians 10:32-33; 11:1
Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or
to the church of God, just as I try to
please everyone in everything I do, not
seeking my own advantage, but that of
many, that they may be saved. Be
imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
19. Philippians 2:5-9
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in
Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God,
did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
but made himself nothing, taking the form of a
servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being
found in human form, he humbled himself by
becoming obedient to the point of death, even death
on a cross.
21. A real Christian is an odd number, anyway. He feels
supreme love for One whom he has never seen; talks
familiarly everyday to someone he cannot see; expects to
go to heaven on the virtue of another; empties himself in
order to be full; admits he is wrong so he can be declared
right; goes down in order to get up; is strongest when he is
weakest; richest when he is poorest; happiest when he
feels the worst. He dies so he can live; forsakes in order to
have; gives away so he can keep; sees the invisible; hears
the inaudible; and knows that which passeth knowledge.
A.W. Tozer, The Root of the Righteous
Editor's Notes
Paul has just addressed issues of divisions in the church, marriage, sexual immorality, food offered to idols, and is now directing us to look at them all through the lens of the Gospel…
They have freedom and were using it to do things that were not glorifying to God…”freedom in Christ!” and then sinning…he’s going to show what true freedom looks like…freedom to sacrifice your own comfort for the good of others because you know the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus…
Not selfish…Paul wanting to share in the blessings himself shows the value of the Gospel…
All that he does here and talks about here is rooted in love…if he doesn’t have love, he says in 1 Cor. 13:3 but gives away all he has and delivers his body up to be burned, he gains nothing…he is in this for gain!
Do we see the principle of sacrificial, Christ-exalting love at work here? Submitting himself to “bondage” willingly in order win others…influence…this is a completely backwards thought to the world… What does this look like? We’ll see…
Start to see his goal here and some common language…that I might win…that I might save…
Three categories of people here he describes:
Jews
Those under the law
Those outside the law
Why to become like a Jew? He is a Jew! This points to the deliverance from self-righteousness (works-based salvation) that he experienced upon conversion…here he’s talking about that he’ll participate in their Jewish traditions so he doesn’t miss an opportunity to tell them about Christ
Had Timothy (Jewish mom) be circumcised so there wouldn’t be any hindrance to their work in spreading the Gospel
First statement about his relationship to the law…he’s not under it…
Three categories of people here he describes:
Jews
Those under the law
Those outside the law
Who are those outside the law? Gentiles…no knowledge of/appreciation for the law of Moses…
Sensitive to cultural expectations while not compromising the gospel of freedom in Christ
What’s his goal here? To win them!
First statement here about his relationship to the law…he’s not under the law… (he knows it’s not where his salvation comes from)
But he is not outside it (he doesn’t reject the value and purpose of God’s law or his accountability under it)
He is under the law of Christ (this is the law that says love God and love your neighbor as yourself)
Weak…could be those with low social status or those who were less mature believers and struggled with eating meat, etc. (more likely because it fits with the rest of his letter)…encouraging mature believers to be sensitive to the weakness of others in regards to food, etc.
Not talking about joining in sin! Willingness to limit his personal freedoms for the good of others, namely, their salvation.
Walking a line here…two sides we can fall into:
separatism…so separate from the world that we don’t have any contact with the world and can’t be of any influence
So like the world that we don’t have anything to offer them
If so, you have probably crossed the line of the law of Christ. Christ doe not call you to lose your holiness, but to gain theirs.
If it is shrinking, then you are not in the law of Christ at that point.
Not selfish…Paul wanting to share in the blessings himself shows the value of the Gospel…
Not saying that only one person can receive the prize or that we are in competition with other Christians…he’s using the analogy of a race and runners because his audience would be familiar with this…Corinth hosted the Isthmian Games, second only to the Olympic Games.
His point is that in the same way an athlete trains and disciplines their body and strive with all their might for the prize, how much more should we pursue the prize and that others should receive it as well?
We are called to do image our Father, and that includes doing things like He does, on purpose & with purpose…can’t have influence if we just walk around aimlessly.
Just had the Olympics…stories on self-sacrifice, self-control, self-denial, all for a perishable crown…
Self-control is listed as a fruit of the Spirit…we’re not expected to do this on our own…
Imperishable…Jesus talks about this in the Sermon on the Mount…idea of earthly reward vs. heavenly reward…thieves can’t break in to steal and moth and rust cannot destroy…Peter contrasts perishable and imperishable in his 1 letter to those believers who are scattered and exiled, encouraging them to keep running…
Drinking…
Again, living on purpose with purpose…no Olympic athlete ever just ”accidentally” made it to the Olympic games…so for us the kind of life of influence Paul is talking about here takes sacrifice and purpose on our part…it is God who works in us both to will and to work for His good pleasure…
Disqualified…if you are disqualified, then you never were qualified…can’t lose our salvation, rather our work is proof that salvation is or isn’t already there…Phil. 3:12 I press on to take hold of that for which Christ has already taken hold of me…
We can be really busy doing things, even “things of God”, but if not with the right heart, we can look back on a life of uselessness, or worse, that our works prove us to be disqualified.
Down to the most basic of things…whatever you do…
Imitators of me…join me in imitating Christ…
Who does this remind you of?
A thing to be grasped…put aside His rights…
A servant…just what Paul has called us to be for others…
Gave up everything, ultimately himself, that we may be saved…
If we are to have this mind among us, if we are to life self-sacrificing lives not out of duty but out of deep delight in God and love for others, how is that going for you these days?
This is how we stick out in the world, this is how our influence is recognized…
