Agency and Mission
DREAM center - Cal Poly's Dream Center is committed to offering a safe, inclusive space for all
undocumented students, those from mixed-status families, and their allies.
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Dream Center is to support, empower, and advocate for the academic,
professional, and personal development and success of all undocumented students at Cal Poly.
We aim to empower each student's identity as Cal Poly Mustangs and are committed to
providing them with the resources needed to align with our Learn by Doing community.
Vision Statement:
To get the Cal Poly campus community to become allies for undocumented students and to
provide support to undocumented students. Also to provide a discussion about the stories and
options undocumented students have on campus.
Values Statement:
Maintain t​he confidentiality of individual students while fostering a welcoming community
environment that aligns with the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Our greatest strength for our organization is that we are working with a community that we
can reach on our own campus. This benefits us with increased knowledge on our event space
as well as how we can effectively reach our target audience. The greatest threat to our

organization is that because it potentially can be a sensitive topic, we may be at a
disadvantage when reaching out to people with strong political/personal beliefs.

● Function statement: help provide an event which educates people on DACA and undocumented
students, provide an engaging environment for those to learn, safe space, confidential, design and
organize events.

CEP Part B
Defining the Target Audience:
The target audience for our event are students of Cal Poly, allies, undocumented students,
and anyone interested in the stories of undocumented students. Undocumented students typically
have been brought to America at a young age and have not received proper documentation yet.
Most of them come from Latin America and East Asian countries but consider America their
home. We will be tabling in the booth in the UU and in Dexter to attract this population to our
event.

The survey will be administered through a google form sent to Cal Poly students through forms
of social media such as facebook, group me, etc. The Survey will be sent out on a monday and
will close on Friday. Results will be analyzed by grouping people's responses based on similar
demographics and searching for like trends/ common beliefs.
Survey Results:
The results of the survey showed a common target audience of students with an average age of
19-21. There was a common trend in the responses saying that they don’t typically attend events
on campus because they are often unaware of them. A lot of the responses said that their main
social media use is Facebook. Based on the results we want to create UndocuJoy, an on campus
awareness event and gets students involved in several aspects.
Program Goals and Design:
Dream Day - socializing event​ ​for Cal Poly students, Cal Poly undocumented students, and the
Dream center to get to know each other and form a sense of community.
Target Market: All Cal Poly Students including the undocumented student population
Problem Statement: Cal Poly students need to be able to connect and support the undocumented
student population.
Dream of awareness- day full of spreading awareness about Cal Poly’s undocumented student
population and their resilience.
Target Market: All Cal Poly Students and Faculty
Problem Statement: Cal Poly community needs to be more connected with and better understand
the undocumented student population.

Educators Coming Out day- social, educational, and awareness event.
Target Market: All Cal Poly Students including the undocumented student population, Cal Poly
Faculty
Problem Statement: The undocumented student population needs to build a sense of community
with all of Cal Poly, and share their resilience.
UndocuJoy Day
● Cal Poly’s undocumented student population need to engage in an experience that
connects them with the greater community at Cal Poly. The Cal Poly community needs to
gain awareness of their power and resilience so that they can become an advocate.

● Have fifty people contribute to the mural, have thirty people attend the guest speaker and
discussion, and raise at least $250 through the “Butterfly Effect”

- Day of the Dead Celebration in the UU

- The rose wall art installation was so beautiful
Didi you enjoy the event being in an open space?
- Yes. I feel like it was a chance to culture students on a very important day in Latin
American culture. I drawed attention for sure.
What sparked your interest in going to this event?
- On social media the multicultural center posted about how there would be a alter and
rituals performed.
Digging Deeper:
What did you think could be improved?
- I wish there was more speakers, interactive and art.
Can you name a memorable part of the event?
- During the Aztec ritual it involved the entire crowd and I felt a sense of unity.
Are you close with anyone undocumented?

- I know a lot of DACA students and immigrant families. I think that the Dream Center
needs to be more known on campus.

creativity, and participation.
Problem Statement- The Dream Center wants an event that will engage students with the stories
and experiences of their undocumented peers.

Feedback:
What Worked-
Silhouette art idea is original and a neat idea. The idea of a silhouette and then the stories of the
undocumented students will help spread awareness of the their hardships to students.
What could be improved?-
Maybe make the silhouette a side profile instead of head on.

This strategy helped us be more creative and intentional when making decisions for our event.

Background Information:

​UndocuJoy Day- Community Outreach
● UndocuJoy Day- Community Outreach
● Cal Poly’s undocumented student population need to engage in an experience that
connects them with the greater community at Cal Poly.
● Cal Poly students, faculty, and undocumented students
● Have fifty people contribute to the mural, have thirty people attend the guest speaker and
discussion, and raise at least $250 through the “Butterfly Effect Club”
Needs were determined by interview responses gained from design thinking. By providing an
experience that allows undocumented students at Cal Poly to connect with allies and gain a sense
of community.
Operational Details
Venue Arrangements
We are hosting the event in building 52 room E-03 as well as The Dream Center (building 52 room E-11).
Two alternatives we could have used was E-29 or E-27. E-29 was only able to hold 30 people and was
rather small. While E-27 had a capacity of 106. We chose E-03 due to the room being able to hold 46
people and has a layout that will be beneficial to the event.
At first we made reservations for the room through the office of registrars website, but then we were
informed that we would be charged a sum of money. So one of our helpers in the Dreams center’s club
was able to book the room with no charge.
Accomodation:
In our event everyone is welcome to join our workshop on the awareness of undocumented students at Cal
Poly. All of the buildings on campus cater to anyone with disabilities and our event does not require any
physical activity. The discussion is the engaging aspect of our event which allows for ideas to be spread
on campus. Another aspect of the event that engages the participants is a scavenger hunt. The scavenger
hunt involves drawings of butterflies spread around campus and every butterfly found the “Butterfly
Effect” club will donate $250.
Equipment and Supplies:
● 1 8x8 piece of plywood for the mural.
● 1 of each orange and black paint
● 1 Bed Sheet for mural.
● 4 boxes of Clorox wipes to wash hands
● 1 Easy up tent for tabling in the UU to advertise for the event.
● 1 Foldable table to advertise in the UU.
● TBD boxes of Costco Pizza

Promotion Plan
We will be promoting our event with a poly portal announcement, Facebook Event page, and flyers.

The flyers will be posted across Cal Poly’s campus as well as online on Cal Poly’s Portal and
Facebook for our social media platform.

Registration
● Registration will not be necessary due to the event being open and free to the public.
Staffing and Staff Orientation:
● Event will not require any paid staff, will rely on volunteer work.
Volunteering:
● We will be needing 10 Volunteers. Two Discussion Facilitators, two Tabling UU, two Tabling
Dexter, two Set-up crew, and two for clean up crew.
● We met us with USFC Sororities and Fraternities. Nu Alpha Kappa expressed a lot of interest in
the event and will be helping out with discussion, set-up, clean-up and tabling! We made a
Google Form so that we can keep an organized list of who is doing what. Sylvia and Lauren will
be supervising the volunteers.
● During meetings with NAK, Sylvia discussed the possible volunteer roles and what each will be
doing and the time commitment for each.

Cancellation Plan
Event may need to be cancelled if there is a cancelation in venue reservation or if unexpected
weather affects the availability to booth outside.
Katherine Zevallos Pastor, the Dream Center Coordinator, will decide if the event is cancelled.

This will be communicated to volunteers in a timely and urgent email detailing the situation and
cancellation. The participants will be made aware through the Facebook Event Page.
The event will be rescheduled for March 16th, the closest date with venue availability. .
Set Up
Food needs to be arranged on tables so that guests can easily access food without disrupting flow
of the room. Butterfly photos and stories need to be neatly hung on the front wall so that guests
can easily view and read.
Five people are needed for set up.
Set Up needs to take place the day of the event, an hour before the event start time of 9:30 AM.

Risk Management:

This event does not involve much risk, however in case of emergency Sylvia and Jonathan are both CPR
certified and know the proper procedures in case of an emergency.
Record Keeping:
The only records that we need to keep are the costs of the equipment and materials we use. This is
recorded through a budget created on excel.

Venue Set up:
Before the event starts we will go to the venue and display the breakfast and bios of the undocumented
throughout the room. We will also make sure that the speaker at the event has a comfortable platform to
present their information.
Thank You Letter:
We will be writing Thank you letters plus a little gift to the speakers who volunteered their time to speak.
Experience Design Elements
Theme of the event is allyship, emphasized by the symbolism of the butterfly. Theme is
emphasized and made clear by the reoccuring butterfly symbol, which is current theme the
Dream center uses. Some positive cues to support this are the butterfly mural and the
photo/story gallery. We eliminated the negative cues such as offensive terminology of
undocumented students. Also rather than making this event showcase the struggle of this
population, we are sharing the positives.

Memorabilia:
We are handing out stickers to anyone who attends the event, it will be unanticipated as participants will
receive it at the very end of the event.
Sticker Design:
Multi-sensory engagement
We engaged one of the five senses, sight through the use personal stories written that are aligned with the
butterfly symbol. Taste was engaged through providing both breakfast and lunch consisting of coffee,
donuts, and pizza.​ ​Hearing is engaged through the addition of music playing during breakfast and lunch.
The senses of touch and sight will also be utilized through the interactive mural. The participants will
have to paint their hands and put their handprint in a stencil of a monarch butterfly (the Dream Centers
symbol).
Personalization:
The symbol of the Dream Center is the monarch butterfly and we decided to create mural with a monarch
butterfly. On the Thursday when we table to promote the event we will also have the mural displayed and
students can paint their hand and place their print on the mural to show their support for undocumented
students.
Co-Creation:
Before the event we will be tabling in the UU on Thursday during UU Hour. There will be a butterfly
mural where people can “pledge their allyship” to undocumented students by painting their hand and

place it on the wings of the butterfly. During the event we will be making butterflies and also have
discussions after a speaker presents. After the event people will have the tools needed to support the
undocumented community and help facilitate a support in their own way.
Engagement, Immersion, Absorption:
Immersion: Scavenger Hunt with Cal Poly Butterfly Effect Club.
Engagement: Guest Speakers, Dr. Bailey and Dr. Ronan plus Q&A and Discussion after
Absorption: Butterfly crafts and photo + story gallery.
The speakers will tell their stories about how they have helped numerous undocumented students and how
we as a community can help too. We will also have a wall with stories from undocumented students for
people to read about.

CEP Part A Agency and Mission DREAM center - Cal Poly's Dream Center is committed to offering a safe, inclusive space for all undocumented students, those from mixed-status families, and their allies. Mission Statement: The mission of the Dream Center is to support, empower, and advocate for the academic, professional, and personal development and success of all undocumented students at Cal Poly. We aim to empower each student's identity as Cal Poly Mustangs and are committed to providing them with the resources needed to align with our Learn by Doing community. Vision Statement: To get the Cal Poly campus community to become allies for undocumented students and to provide support to undocumented students. Also to provide a discussion about the stories and options undocumented students have on campus. Values Statement: Maintain t​he confidentiality of individual students while fostering a welcoming community environment that aligns with the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. This benefits us with increased knowledge on our event space as well as how we can effectively reach our target audience. The greatest threat to our 4
  • 5. organization is that because it potentially can be a sensitive topic, we may be at a disadvantage when reaching out to people with strong political/personal beliefs. Organizational Chart: Job Descriptions: Event Planner for DREAM Center: ● Tasks: Create an engaging event, reserve space, bring community together ● Domain: events, marketing, coordination, execution, ● Supervision: Katherine- Head of DREAM Center ● Traits: open, honest, ideological, logistical,creativity, problem-solving, visualization, resourceful ● Education experience: RPTA 210 students, EIM major, BS in Hospitality or Events ● Function statement: help provide an event which educates people on DACA and undocumented students, provide an engaging environment for those to learn, safe space, confidential, design and organize events. Supervisor: ● Tasks: keep in constant communication with event staff, approve all actions by event staff ● Domain: oversee staff and volunteers, finances, leadership ● Supervision: Head of DREAM Center 5

Supervise group as well to make sure we are all doing equal work. Community Outreach: ● Tasks: create a safe space for undocumented students, provide benefits for those affected, ● Domain: communication, facilitation ● Supervision: Cal Poly Clubs Head ● Traits: Open, honest, supportive, safe environment, confidentiality, accountability, resourceful ● Education experience: Graduate student ● Function statement: Talks to people in the community (DACA students, cultural greek life), communicates with DREAM staff, immigration lawyers, Cal Poly staff as well Strategic Programming Directions: ● Support all undocumented students on Cal Poly’s campus. ● Educate all of Cal Poly on the issue to bring more allies to provide acceptance and inclusivity. ● Funding for all undocumented students to renew their DACA status CEP Part B Defining the Target Audience: The target audience for our event are students of Cal Poly, allies, undocumented students, and anyone interested in the stories of undocumented students. Undocumented students typically have been brought to America at a young age and have not received proper documentation yet. Most of them come from Latin America and East Asian countries but consider America their home. We will be tabling in the booth in the UU and in Dexter to attract this population to our event. Questionnaire: 6
  • 7. What gender do you identify with? What School Year are you? What is your ethnicity? What is your major? Where are you from? What forms of social media do you utilize? How likely are you to attend an on campus event? What extracurriculars are you apart of? Are you apart of any on campus clubs? The survey will be administered through a google form sent to Cal Poly students through forms of social media such as facebook, group me, etc. The Survey will be sent out on a monday and will close on Friday. Results will be analyzed by grouping people's responses based on similar demographics and searching for like trends/ common beliefs. Survey Results: The results of the survey showed a common target audience of students with an average age of 19-21. There was a common trend in the responses saying that they don’t typically attend events on campus because they are often unaware of them. A lot of the responses said that their main social media use is Facebook. Based on the results we want to create UndocuJoy, an on campus awareness event and gets students involved in several aspects. Program Goals and Design: Dream Day - socializing event​ ​for Cal Poly students, Cal Poly undocumented students, and the Dream center to get to know each other and form a sense of community. Target Market: All Cal Poly Students including the undocumented student population Problem Statement: Cal Poly students need to be able to connect and support the undocumented student population. Dream of awareness- day full of spreading awareness about Cal Poly’s undocumented student population and their resilience. Target Market: All Cal Poly Students and Faculty Problem Statement: Cal Poly community needs to be more connected with and better understand the undocumented student population. 7
  • 8. Educators Coming Out day- social, educational, and awareness event. Target Market: All Cal Poly Students including the undocumented student population, Cal Poly Faculty Problem Statement: The undocumented student population needs to build a sense of community with all of Cal Poly, and share their resilience. UndocuJoy Day ● Cal Poly’s undocumented student population need to engage in an experience that connects them with the greater community at Cal Poly. The Cal Poly community needs to gain awareness of their power and resilience so that they can become an advocate. ● Cal Poly students, faculty, and undocumented students ● Have fifty people contribute to the mural, have thirty people attend the guest speaker and discussion, and raise at least $250 through the “Butterfly Effect” Design Thinking: Interview questions- What was the last event you went to? - Day of the Dead Celebration in the UU What was the highlight of the event? - The rose wall art installation was so beautiful Didi you enjoy the event being in an open space? - Yes. I feel like it was a chance to culture students on a very important day in Latin American culture. I drawed attention for sure. What sparked your interest in going to this event? - On social media the multicultural center posted about how there would be a alter and rituals performed. Digging Deeper: What did you think could be improved? - I wish there was more speakers, interactive and art. Can you name a memorable part of the event? - During the Aztec ritual it involved the entire crowd and I felt a sense of unity. Are you close with anyone undocumented? 8
  • 9. - I know a lot of DACA students and immigrant families. I think that the Dream Center needs to be more known on campus. Goals and Wishes: interaction, unity support, awareness, care, empathy, love, family, art, creativity, and participation. Problem Statement- The Dream Center wants an event that will engage students with the stories and experiences of their undocumented peers. Idea list: ● Guest Speaker (Dr. Bailey) ● Have an art piece that displays the stories of undocumented students who attend Cal Poly ● A mural of a monarch butterfly that is interactive ● Invite cultural organizations on campus to attend ● Use CP Butterfly Effect to fundraise money to the Dream Center ● Table out on Dexter/UU to promote event the day before the event takes place ● Make a documentary ● Speakers ● Scavenger hunt ● Pledge of support ● Trainings ● Social media campaign Feedback: What Worked- Silhouette art idea is original and a neat idea. The idea of a silhouette and then the stories of the undocumented students will help spread awareness of the their hardships to students. What could be improved?- Maybe make the silhouette a side profile instead of head on. Takeaways from Design thinking: This strategy helped us be more creative and intentional when making decisions for our event. Experience Map: Intentional Outcomes- Social awareness, fundraising, support of undocumented workers Touchpoints- Photograph of student (bio+photo), food for fundraising (pizza, soda, and Slodoco), speakers + scavenger hunt → support DACA students, workshops (social awareness), & Dream Center Club 9

For some added points you can make suggestions and revisions to the mission and values statements (-.5, -.5) Made revisions to mission and values statements. Please see line 1 Page 3 Great job identifying some key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats! I would like to see 2-3 for each section. So please beef that up a little bit. Can you put it into a graphic like we did on the board in class so it’s more easily readable/comparable to each other. Then you can get extra points if you include a paragraph or two that further fleshes out and discusses what’s happening in the SWOT Analysis and what it means for the organization.   • 12. ​UndocuJoy Day- Community Outreach ● UndocuJoy Day- Community Outreach ● Cal Poly’s undocumented student population need to engage in an experience that connects them with the greater community at Cal Poly. ● Cal Poly students, faculty, and undocumented students ● Have fifty people contribute to the mural, have thirty people attend the guest speaker and discussion, and raise at least $250 through the “Butterfly Effect Club” Needs were determined by interview responses gained from design thinking. By providing an experience that allows undocumented students at Cal Poly to connect with allies and gain a sense of community. Operational Details Venue Arrangements We are hosting the event in building 52 room E-03 as well as The Dream Center (building 52 room E-11). Two alternatives we could have used was E-29 or E-27. E-29 was only able to hold 30 people and was rather small. While E-27 had a capacity of 106. We chose E-03 due to the room being able to hold 46 people and has a layout that will be beneficial to the event. At first we made reservations for the room through the office of registrars website, but then we were informed that we would be charged a sum of money. So one of our helpers in the Dreams center’s club was able to book the room with no charge. Accomodation: In our event everyone is welcome to join our workshop on the awareness of undocumented students at Cal Poly. All of the buildings on campus cater to anyone with disabilities and our event does not require any physical activity. The discussion is the engaging aspect of our event which allows for ideas to be spread on campus. Another aspect of the event that engages the participants is a scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt involves drawings of butterflies spread around campus and every butterfly found the “Butterfly Effect” club will donate $250. Equipment and Supplies: ● 1 8x8 piece of plywood for the mural. ● 1 of each orange and black paint ● 1 Bed Sheet for mural. ● 4 boxes of Clorox wipes to wash hands ● 1 Easy up tent for tabling in the UU to advertise for the event. ● 1 Foldable table to advertise in the UU. ● TBD boxes of Costco Pizza 12
  • 13. ● 3 boxes of Starbucks coffee ● 3 boxes of SLODOCO donuts ● 1 box of printer paper for flyers Promotion Plan We will be promoting our event with a poly portal announcement, Facebook Event page, and flyers. 13

  • 15. The flyers will be posted across Cal Poly’s campus as well as online on Cal Poly’s Portal and Facebook for our social media platform.   • 16. Registration ● Registration will not be necessary due to the event being open and free to the public. Staffing and Staff Orientation: ● Event will not require any paid staff, will rely on volunteer work. Volunteering: ● We will be needing 10 Volunteers. Two Discussion Facilitators, two Tabling UU, two Tabling Dexter, two Set-up crew, and two for clean up crew. ● We met us with USFC Sororities and Fraternities. Nu Alpha Kappa expressed a lot of interest in the event and will be helping out with discussion, set-up, clean-up and tabling! We made a Google Form so that we can keep an organized list of who is doing what. Sylvia and Lauren will be supervising the volunteers. ● During meetings with NAK, Sylvia discussed the possible volunteer roles and what each will be doing and the time commitment for each. Overall planning timeline. 16
  • 17. Cancellation Plan Event may need to be cancelled if there is a cancelation in venue reservation or if unexpected weather affects the availability to booth outside. Katherine Zevallos Pastor, the Dream Center Coordinator, will decide if the event is cancelled. The decision is made when 17
  • 18. This will be communicated to volunteers in a timely and urgent email detailing the situation and cancellation. The participants will be made aware through the Facebook Event Page. The event will be rescheduled for March 16th, the closest date with venue availability. . Set Up Food needs to be arranged on tables so that guests can easily access food without disrupting flow of the room. Butterfly photos and stories need to be neatly hung on the front wall so that guests can easily view and read. Five people are needed for set up. Set Up needs to take place the day of the event, an hour before the event start time of 9:30 AM. Diagram of set up: Risk Management: 18
  • 19. This event does not involve much risk, however in case of emergency Sylvia and Jonathan are both CPR certified and know the proper procedures in case of an emergency. Record Keeping: The only records that we need to keep are the costs of the equipment and materials we use. This is recorded through a budget created on excel. Schedule: March 8th, Friday 8:00-9:00- Set up 9:30 AM-10:00 AM - Free SLODOCO and Coffee 10:00 AM- 10:30 Am- Spreaker: Dr. Phil Bailey 10:30 AM- 11:00 AM- Butterfly Activity 12:30 PM- 1:00 PM- Speaker: Brianna Ronan 1:30 PM- 2:00 PM- Discussion 2:00 PM- 2:30 PM- Clean Up Venue Set up: Before the event starts we will go to the venue and display the breakfast and bios of the undocumented throughout the room. We will also make sure that the speaker at the event has a comfortable platform to present their information. Thank You Letter: We will be writing Thank you letters plus a little gift to the speakers who volunteered their time to speak. Experience Design Elements Theme of the event is allyship, emphasized by the symbolism of the butterfly. Theme is emphasized and made clear by the reoccuring butterfly symbol, which is current theme the Dream center uses. Some positive cues to support this are the butterfly mural and the photo/story gallery. We eliminated the negative cues such as offensive terminology of undocumented students. Also rather than making this event showcase the struggle of this population, we are sharing the positives. 19
  • 20. Memorabilia: We are handing out stickers to anyone who attends the event, it will be unanticipated as participants will receive it at the very end of the event. Sticker Design: Multi-sensory engagement We engaged one of the five senses, sight through the use personal stories written that are aligned with the butterfly symbol. Taste was engaged through providing both breakfast and lunch consisting of coffee, donuts, and pizza.​ ​Hearing is engaged through the addition of music playing during breakfast and lunch. The senses of touch and sight will also be utilized through the interactive mural. The participants will have to paint their hands and put their handprint in a stencil of a monarch butterfly (the Dream Centers symbol). Personalization: The symbol of the Dream Center is the monarch butterfly and we decided to create mural with a monarch butterfly. On the Thursday when we table to promote the event we will also have the mural displayed and students can paint their hand and place their print on the mural to show their support for undocumented students. Co-Creation: Before the event we will be tabling in the UU on Thursday during UU Hour. There will be a butterfly mural where people can “pledge their allyship” to undocumented students by painting their hand and 20
  • 21. place it on the wings of the butterfly. During the event we will be making butterflies and also have discussions after a speaker presents. After the event people will have the tools needed to support the undocumented community and help facilitate a support in their own way. Engagement, Immersion, Absorption: Immersion: Scavenger Hunt with Cal Poly Butterfly Effect Club. Engagement: Guest Speakers, Dr. Bailey and Dr. Ronan plus Q&A and Discussion after Absorption: Butterfly crafts and photo + story gallery. The speakers will tell their stories about how they have helped numerous undocumented students and how we as a community can help too. We will also have a wall with stories from undocumented students for people to read about.   Revisions  For the table of contents can you share what  pages each of the sections starts on?  We have added page numbers. ​See Table of Contents Can you be a little more in depth with your  target audience?
