1) Brothers Cory and Peyton Marx plan to rob their abusive father Adrian and steal money he owes them. They break into their family home while wearing masks and carrying guns.
2) During the robbery, their mother Becka discovers them and screams, alerting Adrian. A shootout ensues in which Cory accidentally kills both of his parents.
3) Stricken with guilt, Cory wants to turn himself in to the police but Peyton insists they must cover up the crime. When Cory has a breakdown, Peyton shoots and kills him to silence him, then drives away.
2. FADE IN:
I/E. BLACK CAR - NIGHT
A BLACK CAR pulls up to an unlit house. CORY MARX, 22, rides
shotgun. PEYTON MARX, 28, drives. They wear all black and
GLOVES; guns concealed in jackets.
PEYTON
We’re here. Once we go inside,
there’s no turning back. Are you
sure--
CORY
Why do you keep asking me that?
Stop asking me that.
Peyton stares at Cory’s leg that shakes, his knee bumping
against the glove compartment.
PEYTON
Probably because you won’t stop
shaking your leg.
CORY
I’m fine, let’s just... I’m fine. I
can do this. I promise.
PEYTON
Cory--
CORY
I’m not going to let you down.
Cory holds up his right arm, hand wound in a fist.
CORY (CONT'D)
To the end.
Peyton mirrors, taping his arm to Cory’s.
PEYTON
To the end.
They put on SKI MASKS, ready GUNS, and head to the house.
EXT. HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Manicured lawn surrounds a vibrant garden. Stone steps leads
to a grand front door. They sneak around the back to a POOL.
Cory waits at the back door.
3. 2.
Peyton locates a KEY taped inside the SKIMMER entrance. He
meets Cory and unlocks the back door.
INT. HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Moonlight shines inside. The house is immaculate with
PAINTINGS and STATUES for decoration. Pictures of a happy
couple line the walls.
Cory and Peyton sneak downstairs into an empty basement.
Peyton locates a SAFE. He reaches a hand out to Cory.
PEYTON
The bag.
CORY
Uh... Right.
Cory fumbles in his jacket. He pulls out a BAG. He gives it
to Peyton. His hand shakes, nearly dropping the bag. Peyton
gives a look. Cory wipes his hand on his jacket.
PEYTON
Just stand guard, okay.
Cory nods, tightening his grip on his gun. Peyton works on
the safe. He easily types in the combination. Cory stands by
the steps, gun in hand, staring at the floor.
FLASHBACK:
A YOUNG PEYTON, 16, cradles naked on the basement floor, back
bloody. YOUNG CORY, 10, sits in the corner, crying, holding
his knees.
YOUNG CORY
Stop, please! He’s had enough.
YOUNG ADRIAN MARX, 39, stands with a bloody belt.
YOUNG ADRIAN
I wouldn’t have to punish you if
you would just stop fighting back.
YOUNG PEYTON
It’s okay Cory. I can handle this.
Adrian drops the belt. He unbuttons his pants.
2.
4. 3.
END FLASHBACK:
Peyton, holding a full bag of money, shakes Cory from looking
at the floor.
PEYTON
Hey, snap out of it. I told you to
stand guard.
CORY
Do you think he ever really loved
us?
PEYTON
What?
A woman, BECKA MARX, 51, walks downstairs. She SCREAMS.
ADRIAN MARX, 51, follows with a GUN.
ADRIAN
You two are stealing from the wrong
person.
He fires. The brothers dodge. Cory fires back blindly. He
hits Adrian and Becka. They fall dead. Cory still fires.
PEYTON
Cory! Stop! That’s enough.
The gun empties. Cory keeps shooting with closed eyes. Peyton
slowly takes the gun away. Cory opens his eyes.
CORY
What have I done?
Cory runs to Becka.
CORY (CONT'D)
Mom? Please mom. Get up. I’m sorry.
I didn’t mean to--
He cradles her in his arms.
CORY (CONT'D)
I’m so sorry.
PEYTON
Cory, we have to go. Now.
Peyton removes Cory from Becka and pushes him up the stairs.
Peyton stares at Becka. He straightens out her body to lay as
if in a casket. He rubs her hair. He stares at Adrian.
3.
5. 4.
PEYTON (CONT'D)
(to Adrian)
This is your punishment.
He spits and leaves.
EXT. HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Peyton puts the key back and they run to the car. They drive
off.
I/E. BLACK CAR - MOMENTS LATER
They drive silently down a desert road. Peyton looks to Cory
whose leg shakes, rattling the glove compartment.
PEYTON
Come on Cor. Talk to me.
CORY
(whisper)
We have to turn back.
PEYTON
What?
CORY
We have to turn back.
PEYTON
We can’t do that.
CORY
Stop the car.
PEYTON
Cory--
CORY
I said stop the car!
Cory grabs the wheel. They veer off the road. The car stops.
Cory falls out, vomiting on the ground. Peyton steps out.
PEYTON
Are you okay?
CORY
No, I’m not okay! I shot them!
They’re dead because of me.
4.
6. 5.
Cory stands. He paces. His hands shake. Peyton watches,
keeping his distance.
PEYTON
They deserved it.
CORY
Did she? She was his victim too.
PEYTON
She knew what he was doing to us.
CORY
She was scared.
PEYTON
We were children. We were his sons.
Her sons, and she just let it
happen.
CORY
You said only what he owed us. We
were just supposed to steal what he
owed us.
(beat)
We have to go back.
Cory heads to the car. Peyton steps in front.
CORY (CONT'D)
We have to go back. We have to turn
ourselves in.
Peyton grabs his shoulders. Cory fights back.
CORY (CONT'D)
This was a mistake. I made a
mistake. They didn’t have to die. I
shouldn’t have--
PEYTON
You did what you had to do.
Peyton pushes him back.
CORY
No. I did what you had to do. He
only touched me once.
PEYTON
And why do you think that is? I
protected you brother. I always
have and I always will. We can’t go
back.
5.
7. 6.
CORY
The police will understand. After
we tell them what he did, they’ll
be on our side.
PEYTON
No. They won’t believe us.
CORY
Why not?
PEYTON
Because we’re his sons. We keep the
secret. To the end, remember? And
we’ll keep this one too.
Cory stares out into the desert. Noticing her blood, he
throws off his jacket.
CORY
I can’t do this. I can’t do this.
They didn’t deserve... She
didn’t... Only what he owed. I made
a mistake. I’m sorry mom. Dad, I’m--
Peyton watches. Cory falls to the ground on his hands and
knees. His entire body shakes. Peyton pulls out his gun.
PEYTON
I’ll keep them for the both of us.
He walks up behind Cory, aims the gun to his head, and fires.
He lays his brother out like his mother. He grabs the jacket,
steps back in the car, and drives off.
FADE TO BLACK.
