2. INT. DINNING ROOM - NIGHT *
Modern. Dining table sat in the center. An untouched meal *
sits before-- *
ROSE, almost 30, elegant, in a crisp, all white knee- *
length dress. Through her wine glass, she watches-- *
SEBASTIAN, mid 30s, Palm Beach bro, stares at his phone. *
A CLOCK TICKS louder. Rose’s irritation builds. *
Sebastian continues to ignore her. *
Rose suddenly jolts up, chair screeching. She slides her *
ENGAGEMENT RING across the table. It hits Sebastians *
plate with a CLINK. This gets his attention. *
SEBASTIAN
What the hell? *
ROSE *
(sarcastic) *
Sorry, didn’t mean to interrupt *
you. *
SEBASTIAN *
Relax, Rose, okay? I’ll put the *
phone away. Just sit down. *
ROSE *
No. I can’t do this anymore. I *
don’t want this. I don’t want you. *
I don’t want to waste my life with *
you. I don’t even want to spend my *
30th birthday with you! *
Rose heads for the door. *
SEBASTIAN *
You walk out of here, all you’re *
going to do is disappoint your *
family... Again! *
She doesn’t stop. Sebastian cuts her off at the door. *
Grabs her keys. Chucks them into the yard. Rose sneers. *
ROSE *
Seriously?
She grabs her purse, pushes past Sebastian out the door. *
3. EXT. HOUSE - FRONT YARD - CONTINUOUS *
Rose sees her bike on the porch walks it to the street. *
Sebastian follows Rose out. *
SEBASTIAN
It’s dark! Where are you going to *
go? Are you crazy?! *
ROSE
Anywhere I damn please. And yes-- *
Yes I am crazy! *
Purse in her basket, she peddles off. Away from her home. *
Away from Sebastian. From all the expectations. Freedom! *
She turns down a street. Hears HEAVY BREATHING behind *
her. She glances back: Sebastian chasing her, barefoot. *
SEBASTIAN
My mother is coming over!
ROSE *
I’m not talking to your mom! *
SEBASTIAN *
Maybe if you acted like an adult, *
you wouldn’t need my mom to talk *
sense into your thick-- *
Rose snorts. Peddles harder. Sebastian gives up. *
SEBASTIAN *
You’re INSANE! *
Rose laughs uncontrollably. Madness. *
*
DIRTY 30 *
*
INT. SEEDY MOTEL - FRONT DESK - NIGHT *
Old Florida feel--flamingos, palm tree wallpaper, moldy *
green carpet. *
The creepy MANAGER, peaked in the ‘70s, scratches lottery *
tickets. *
The bell above the door JINGLES. He doesn’t look up. *
mm/dd/yy (White) 2.
4. MANAGER
60 dollars a night. *
He finally glances up. Sees Rose, crisp white dress now *
dirty, rumpled, stained with sweat. And... Her bike. *
MANAGER
If you’re a run away, I suggest
you go on home. *
Rose slaps her AMEX on the counter. *
Manager points to a sign: CASH ONLY. *
Rose swaps the AMEX for THREE TWENTIES. Manager takes it. *
MANAGER
No funny business. *
ROSE
Room number?
The manager holds up a key. Keychain reads “ROOM 6”. *
Rose takes it. Straightens. Calms. *
ROSE
Thank you.
Manager goes back to the lottery tickets.
INT. SEEDY MOTEL - ROOM 6 - MOMENTS LATER *
Same decor as the lobby. Rose wheels her bike in. Glances *
at her cell phone. 8 MISSED CALLS from Sebastian; 10 from *
LIL SIS (or something of the like). *
Rose rips the comforter off the bed. Lifts the mattress. *
Turns the pillows over. No sign of bedbugs. She sits. *
Calls “LIL SIS”. Not even one ring-- *
MANDY (V.O.)
Rose?
ROSE
Before you start, Mandy, I’m fine-- *
MANDY (V.O.)
Rose! Thank God. Where the hell *
are you?
Rose begins to laugh, a bit maniacally. *
mm/dd/yy (White) 3.
5. ROSE
In a motel. I rode my bike. He was *
chasing me. Down the street. *
Barefoot... Like an idiot. *
MANDY (V.O.) *
Wish I could have seen that... *
Text me the address.
The call ends. Rose texts the address. Stares at the *
ceiling. She cracks up again. Then stops--WTF did I do? *
INT. SEEDY MOTEL - ROOM 6 - NOT LONG AFTER *
A KNOCK at the door. Rose looks through the peep hole. *
Unlocks. MANDY, “LIL SIS”, so put together for early 20s. *
She sees her older sister--a hot fucking mess. They both *
start laughing. Mandy enters. Hugs Rose. *
MANDY
I brought you a present!
She pulls wine out of her bag. And cups. *
ROSE
Oh, thank god! *
MANDY
I’m the best, I know. *
Rose uncorks, pours. *
ROSE
Happy birthday to me.
The clock hits 12am.
ROSE
So, this is 30. *
MANDY
At least I’m learning from you... *
(beat) *
What happened? *
ROSE *
I don’t even know. I was just *
sitting there, staring my future *
in the face, and something just... *
Snapped. It was like coming out of *
a coma or something. *
(MORE)
mm/dd/yy (White) 4.
6. And I realized I was living a *
fantasy that didn’t really exist, *
and I couldn’t stand to be in that *
lie another second. So... I left. *
MANDY *
You realize mom’s gonna freak. But *
it’s better you figured it out *
now, than ten years down the road. *
Rose takes a sip of wine. *
MANDY *
You’re gonna be fine. *
ROSE *
I have to back to the house *
tomorrow find my car keys. *
MANDY
You mean, to get back into the *
house or something? You are *
claiming that territory, right? *
ROSE
Honestly, I don’t even care about
the house. *
MANDY
What?! It’s yours! You bought it. *
All your clothes and things are in
it. How-- How can you not care? *
Rose places her cup on the nightstand and lays down.
ROSE
It’s just stuff. Means nothing in
the bigger picture.
MANDY
Wow. So, this is what a midlife *
crisis looks like. *
ROSE
No, it’s taking my power back and
seeing what really matters.
MANDY
Well... Can I have your shoes? *
ROSE (CONT'D)
mm/dd/yy (White) 5.
7. EXT. HOUSE - FRONT YARD - MORNING *
The sun glistens on the palm trees. Neighbors driving to *
work. Rose, same dirty white dress, same bike, slows as *
she nears her house; only her car in the driveway. She *
stares at the house. The manicured lawn. The past... *
Rose, on her hands and knees, scours the grass for her *
keys. Then-- *
WHOOSH! The SPRINKLERS erupt. Rose doesn’t give a shit. *
She just keeps searching. Then-- *
The sprinklers stop. Rose, drenched, glances up. *
SEBASTIAN
You could have returned my calls.
I felt bad for throwing your
keys... here.
Sebastian holds out the car keys towards Rose.
ROSE
Thanks for finding them. *
Rose takes the keys. The awkward silence grows. *
SEBASTIAN
I hope you find yourself. *
Rose already at her car, stops to look at Sebastian.
ROSE
(smiles)
I will.
Unspoken words pass between them.... Hope. *
Sebastian steps toward her, but before he reaches. Rose *
is already in the car. Backs out of the driveway. *
INT. CAR - CONTINUOUS *
Windows down. Wind whips her hair around. Mascara streaks *
her cheeks, dirt under her nails, dress filthy, dripping *
on the floorboards, grass stains knees and elbows. *
None of that matters... *
Rose smiles. Cranks the MUSIC. Wild and free. *
FADE OUT. *
mm/dd/yy (White) 6.
