The sale of elephant ivory, rhino horn and tiger parts in Asia alone were worth an estimated R750 million in 2010. Between 1989 and 2009, there were at least 55 very large ivory seizures, with an average volume of 2.3 tons. In the destination markets, these shipments were worth about R20 million apiece at the wholesale level. South Africa is one of the most targeted countries by rhino poachers - in 2007, 13 rhino were poached in the country; by 2011 this had jumped dramatically to 448, with an exceeded 633 in 2012.
