Program Overview
The Technical Career Field (TCF) is a national workforce development program within
VHA that’s was designed to replenish technical staff in critically identified positions.
The TCF career fields represent those technical fields where VA-specific knowledge and
experience is desirable for success in the field. Individuals selected follow a formal
training plan for two years during which we are trained, coached, and supervised by a
preceptor. Preceptors are selected annually, through an extensive application process,
for their technical expertise, their commitment to training and the suitability of their
facility as a training location.
Training and work topics Focus
Classification - classify positions and assign titles, pay plan, and grade;
evaluate/certify position responsibilities for position actions; prepare
documentation in the classification and job grading systems; conduct audits;
process actions; provide advice and assistance with appeal procedures to meet
VA and Office of Personnel Management (OPM) requirements
Salary - conduct salary surveys; determine pay rates for discretionary pay

promotion process for each position. The boarding process was also covered and
how to properly board nurses, along with what each member of the nursing
board duties are.
Assist with the processing of the education/Resident-medical WOC’s employees,
preparing their personnel file and insuring their investigation checks are
complete before starting.
Training of new HR employees on the WOC Process for Residents and Medical

received on time, expiration of time is about to expire.

Assist the PIV office with sponsoring and performing the Bio portion of the PIV
process along with fingerprinting potential employees to assist with the
investigation process.
Resolve various issues within the nursing department that requires investigating
