1. Cut the Chatter!
The problem:
It can be a troubling situation when you have nearly completed a complex component only
to find that it has been ruined by chatter. Whether by milling, turning, or drilling, chatter can
easily cost you time and money that you can’t afford to lose.
To avoid the headache of having to re-create an entirely new component, the following tips
can help you to cut the chatter!
No Shortcuts:
Firstly when turning or milling, ensure that the spur
radius at the tool is not excessive. Trying to save time
by lengthening the spur radius and minimizing the
number of passes required in the milling process, you
are allow greater opportunity for the cutting tool to
strike the surface and create chatter as the material
is fed through.
Keep it Tight:
Also ensure that your cutting tool is securely mounted. This is
true not only for the turning and milling processes, but also
when drilling. Allowing the cutting tool to have free play when
machining reduces the level of control over the cutting tool
and creates chatter.
Drilling Tips:
Finally, when drilling, allow for sufficient feed rate, do not allow
excessive drill overhang, and ensure that cutting tool does not have
excessive incline. When turning or milling, ensure that the material
has sufficient guidance and that the cutting edge width is not too
great.
