1. In 2006 Pluto was demoted to the status of
a dwarf planet.
By Trinity
2. An eleven year old English girl named the
newly discovered unknown planet.
Venetia Burney thought that ‘Pluto’ would be
a good name for the planet which she named
after the Roman God of the dark underworld.
Her grandfather thought it was a good idea.
The grandfather sent the idea ‘Pluto’ to the
Royal Astronomical Society and it was then
accepted.
3. THE PROBLEM WITH
PLUTO PLUTO IS REALLY SMALL
Pluto is a dwarf planet
because it’s too small
for it to be a planet.
It is not a planet because
it’s not big enough to
clear other objects (such
as asteroids) out of its
path and orbit.
4. About Pluto
Royal Astronomical
Society accepted
that planet x could
then be called planet
Pluto in the 1930’s.
In 2006 Pluto was
demoted to a dwarf
planet and it was no
longer a solar
system planet.
Pluto has hardly any
atmosphere.
Pluto is just about all ice.
Pluto orbits the sun in a
really strange way.
This is because as Pluto
moves closer to the Sun ice its
surface moves slightly as
solids evaporate to gases.
As Pluto moves away from
the Sun the gases cool and
refreeze.
Pluto’s orbit is more oval
shaped and elliptical.
5. Things that Pluto is
missing
The outer planets all have a solid
core and methane gas around it.
Pluto does not have that though.
For Pluto to be a planet it will need
to orbit a star and orbit the sun in a
normal orbit path like the outer
planets.
This is an image of Pluto orbiting a
star
6. COMPARING FAR SIGHT
HOW IT WOULD BE
LOOKING AT THE SUN
Pluto is really far away
from the sun.
Pluto is so far away
from the sun that the
temperature freezing.
When looking at the
Sun from Pluto, it is
very small because the
Sun is so far away.
7. HOW PLUTO WAS MADE
FACTS FAST FACTS
It is actually weird how
Pluto is made out of
these kind of objects.
Inside of Pluto there is
water ice and a soft core
that’s (iron nickel alloy
rock). Its almost like an
apple core.
8. SPACE CRAFT STUDYING PLUTO
The spacecraft New
Horizon launched in
2006 has flown past
Pluto this year (2015).
Scientists were excited
to see the first close up
pictures of Pluto. The
space ship called the
New Horizon is now
flying on into
interstellar space.
10. HOW PLUTO WAS
DISCOVERED FAST FACT FACTS
As of 2008 there are five
recognized dwarf
planets. Four are: Pluto,
Eris, Ceres, and
Makemake. It was
discovered in 1801 well
before Pluto and 45
years before Neptune.
11. A THERMOMETER OF PLUTO
COMPARED TO OUTER PLANETS FAST FACT
As you can see Pluto is
right down the bottom.
That means the
temperature is really
cold on Pluto and
there’s a big
temperature drop.
