1. Unit 65 Assignment 2 Task 2
Proposal – Oz Backpackers interactive website
I have been asked to establish a proposal for creating an animated website for ‘Oz Backpackers’
which is a company that specialises in providing accommodation to backpackers across Australia.
There are many different websites like this but what will set Oz Backpackers apart from the rest in
the interactivity that it will incorporate. The website must include key information about travel tips,
hostels and popular tourist sites for young people looking for travel information across Australia. The
site must also include a booking form for travellers to be able to book accommodation.
In order to create this site I will be using vector animation software (adobe flash) in order to
incorporate interactive animations that are fluid with the rest of the site. It will include all the
information with interactive features such as buttons, dragging elements and slide shows. It will
include booking pages and information that is split up into relevant categories.
The colour pallet I plan on using for the website is blue, orange and green. I have chosen these
colours as they represent the nature of Australia well. The blue represents the sea, the orange the
sand and desert and the green the vibrant forests and wildlife. Also both blue and green
complement each other well whereas orange is a nice contrast to add character to the visual quality
of the website. I will have a total of 20 pages. The first page will be the home page that visitors will
see first when entering the site. This page will have all the necessary information to guide the visitor
through the site. This page will have links to all six states. The page will be set up like a map and
when clicking on a state area it will lead to a separate page which will have several other categories
concerning that state. The actual map will be a pale orange with a green border appearing when
guiding the mouse over a state. This will be the most interactive element of the website and will
help finding a way around the site easy and simple.
On each page there will be a logo located at the top which will lead them from anywhere back onto
the homepage. There will also be at the bottom of the page contact information and links to social
media sites such as the ‘Oz Backpackers’ Facebook and Twitter pages. At the top of the page will be
the websites logo and name and under the map there will be information about what ‘Oz
Backpackers’ actually is. The font of the website will use san serif in white or a pale blue. The
background will be white apart from some textual areas where it will be blue or green.
The state pages will have a body of text and relevant images with a title at the top of the screen. The
images will be located to the left side of the page and text will be focused in the middle. It will
provide three buttons on the ride hand side which when clicked on will lead to relevant information.
These buttons will be labelled ‘hostels’ ‘beaches’ and the states most popular city.
These buttons will be orange. When hovering over these buttons it will change colour to green.
When clicking on them it will take the visitor to another page which will provide information, deals
and images. These images will be relevant to the topic. For example the hostel page for West
Australia will only provide images of hostels in west Australia. The city page will have a slideshow
which allows the visitor to flick through many beautiful images of the city. This allows a controlled
interactivity for the visitor. They can choose to flick through the images or leave that element of the
page alone. When selecting a deal on the hostels and beaches pages a payment screen will show up
requesting card details and an address.
The overall background of the screen will have a faded image of the Australian flag mixed into a
collage of photos of people enjoying their backpacking experience. The people in the images will be
2. young to focus on the main target audience. This background will change the images in the collage
for every page and the images will be relevant to what is on this page, excluding the payment page.
The deadline for completion is the26th of November. This shouldn’t be a problem and will not affect
the overall quality of the website.
Copyright
Copyright is enforced upon a laws which protect someone’s (be it an individual or an organisation)
ownership of something of artistic and/or literature expression. This includes drawings, music,
stories, poetry, inventions, architecture and computer software. If someone were to create
something to a similar design of the original product without permission of the creator of said
product this could infringe the copyright laws if it were too similar to the original product. If
something were copied and used for financial gain without permission this would also infringe the
copyright laws. If the something were to be distributed by someone without permission this would
again infringe the copyright laws. Any infringement of copyright laws would entitle the creator of
said product to possibly take to court and sue or even imprison the offender. Usually this isn’t the
case and the problem is resolved before something as serious as this takes place.
In terms of copyright I am aware of the laws given to an artistic expression of art or literature on a
tangible medium. When using someone else’s images or software I will be sure to have their
permission before using said product or I would make sure that people are aware that I have no
ownership over the image or software. In consideration of my own work, I hope you are aware of
the rights of any design work I complete for my product and the product itself. I warn you to be
carefully when using my product and anything that is done with my product must have my
permission before use. I have the rights to my product for up to 70 years after my death. Any of my
graphical design work or animated gifs would also be placed under copyright if it were infringed.
Confidentiality
When considering confidentiality I can assure you that if my proposal is accepted I would not pass on
any information about the product before launch. I’m aware that violating this would break the data
protection legislation, which is put in place to protect companies, producers, inventors and other
groups of people working in trade and creation. It is a set of laws put in place so as to protect groups
of people, usually companies, from having vital and secret information that must be kept secret
being made public. The usual reason being that, in our case, there is a new product being designed
for the public, but if people were to know about the product before its release date another
company may try to steal their idea before launch or know what their competitor is trying to
endorse. This would create a disadvantage for the company and could possibly lose the company
money and credibility.
As part of the developing process any information I receive would be kept confidential between me
and the company. I trust that this agreement would be mutual and any information that is personal
to me such as the profit margin of the product or my cut of the profit or even any of my involvement
in the development including anything that I say or do would be kept confidential within the circle of
people working on the product and the website.
Representation
3. There will be no offensive or discriminating content in consideration of my product and its website.
Any representation of any group of people will not intentionally be offensive. I am aware that I have
a responsibility to represent my product, website and your company positively and truthfully. I will
not misrepresent or discriminate anyone of race, gender, sexual orientation or religion. I will be
presenting my product in a general way. I will try not to make the product seem stereotyped to one
particular group of people, although considering design work I may lean towards the younger
audience as the product itself will probably seem more appealing, new and different and will be
more accepted within this group of people, but the website itself will not punish or make it any less
available to anyone, no matter what their background.
If there is any kind of complaints from the general public considering anything to do with race,
gender etc. as well as indecency (for example, nude images) and slander it will be both mine and
your issue to resolve and I can assure my determination and seriousness when dealing with
complaints and resolving the issue at hand as I trust you will as well. It is very important to keep
anything that is not suitable for children off the website, as it is a family website and must be kept
decent. I will make sure nothing on the website is libel and therefore law breaking. There will be no
images or information concerning indecency such as nudity, violence and offensive language. The
website will be made to be available to the all kinds of people and so the website must be censored
in consideration of children and certain groups of people. If there is any situation where indecent
subjects are exposed on the website, it will be taken down as soon as possible or the website will
close until the subject is removed entirely.
Intellectual property rights
Intellectual property rights are a series of laws put in place in order to protect someone’s invention,
design, brand or creation from being used without authority of the creator for an allotted period of
time. This may be an absolute monopoly right or simply a right to prevent reproduction. Intellectual
property can be switched between several parties, licenced off to other parties or even mortgaged
or used as a security. Copyright is a law which falls under the intellectual property right, which is one
of the automatic laws, applied to any product or design I create, although intellectual property laws
themselves are not all completely an automatic right. Some parts of intellectual property laws must
be registered in order to apply to said product or idea.
I am aware of my intellectual property rights concerning my product and brand name. The design
and brand name will be trademarked to me automatically for ten years. The product itself will be
kept under patents which grant intellectual property law over my product against any form of
marketing distribution for up to twenty years. There are other rights such as the designs law,
Supplementary Protection Certificate, Semiconductor Topography Rights, and Unregistered Design
Right as well as Plant variety rights. Some of these laws would not be applicable to my product, such
as the plant variety rights act which aims to protect the findings and research of a new horticultural
genus or species.
