Walkingon the Moon
When I was in Grade3, I got to take a trip to the
moon.I rememberthedaylike it was yesterday. It
was oneof the strangestexperiencesI’d ever had.
It allstarted whenMissReyes, ourGrade3 Science
teacher,was showingavideo about the different
planetsin the solarsystem. Halfwaythroughthe
video, I noticedasparklingmetaldisc,aboutthe size
of a peso coin, lying onthe floor. I kept trying to pay
attention to the video, but foundmyself bendingover
to pickup the shinydisk that wasnext to mydesk.
As soon as I touchedthemetaldisk, something
strangehappened.I wasn’t in the classroom
anymore. I was hoveringin the air, way above the
school.I couldseethe wholeor rather the rooftops of
the wholecity. I was a little nervous, but also pretty
11. excited.What was happening?HowcouldIbe
floating?
It was then whenI rememberedthemetaldiskI’d
pickedupfrom the floor earlier.Did it I have
somethingtodo with the strangethings that were
happeningtomeright now?I openedmypalm and
lookedcloselyat the disk. On the disk werethese
words:
“Floatingthroughtheair, like a helium filledballoon,
your travels willnot stop, until you reachthe moon”
Thenextthing I knew, I was soaringthroughspace,
dodgingsatellitesandasteroids.Oddlyenough,I
wasn’tcoldandI was ableto breathejust fine. Before
I knewit, I wasstandingon the moon.It was
amazing! It lookedvery different from the Earth. No
trees, water, norhouses. Therewasn’tevenany wind
.
Foreachstep I took I wouldbouncewayupinto the
air. Every step took left a hugefootprint inthe dust. I
hadto be carefulandmakesure
I didn’tjumpintoa craterbecauseI wasn’tsure if I’d
be ableto get out. SometimesIcouldn’tevensee the
bottom.I was boundingover to somethinginthe
distancethat lookedvery out of the place.WhenI got
there, I realizedit wasa flag. Onthe flag werethe
words: “Togoto Earth, closeyour eyes andthink of
what you’ve learned. You will findin no timeat all,
you willbe returned”.I wasn’tsure I wantedto go
backjust yet, but I knew it mightget dark soonand I
didn’twant to be on the moonbymyself in the dark. I
decidedtoclosemyeyes and think of the weather
andother characteristicsofthe moonI’dlearnedthat
day.
12. When I openedmyeyes I was sittingon myseat in
myScienceclassroom.MissReyes wasturningon
the lights becausethevideo wasover. I sat there
wonderingaboutwhatjust happened.I openedmy
handto look at the metaldisk, but it wasgone! DidI

Why DoesOcean HaveWaves?
Theoceanisnever still. Whether observingfrom the
beachora boat, we expectto see waves on the
horizon.
Waves are createdbyenergy passingthroughwater,
causingitto movein a circularmotion.However,
water doesnot actuallytravel in waves. Waves
transmitenergy, not water, acrossthe oceanandif
not obstructedby anything, they have the potentialto
travel acrossanentire oceanbasin.Waves are most
14. commonlycausedbywind. Wind-drivenwaves, or
surfacewaves, createdbythe frictionbetweenwind
andsurfacewater. As windblowsacrossthe surface
of the oceanor a lake, the continualdisturbance
createsa wave crest. Thesetypes of waves are
foundgloballyacrosstheopen oceanandalongthe
coast.
Morepotentiallyhazardouswaves canbecausedby
severe weather, likea hurricane.Thestrongwinds
andpressure from this type of severe storm causes
storm surge, a series of longwaves that are created
far from shorein deepwater andintensify as they
move closerto land.Otherhazardous waves canbe
causedbyunderwaterdisturbancesthatdisplace
largeamountsof water quicklysuchas earthquakes,
landslides,orvolcanic eruptions.Theseverylong
waves are calledtsunamis.Storm surgeand
tsunamisarenot the type of waves you imagine
crashingdownonthe shore. Thesewavesrollupon
the shore likea massivesea level rise andcanreach
far distancesinland.
Thegravitationalpullof the sun andmoononEarth
alsocauseswaves. Thesewavesare tidesor, in
other words, tidalwaves. It is a common
misconceptionthata tidalwave is alsoa tsunami.
Thecauseoftsunamisarenot relatedto tide
informationatall but canoccurinanytidalstate.
