2015 Team Captain Handbook
Sunday, October 4, 2015
One small thought turns into one
word, which turns into one action,
which affects one life,
one community,
one country, and
one world.
THANK YOU for joining the Central and South Jersey Affiliate in the quest for a
world without breast cancer. Whether you are a rookie or a returning Team
Captain, YOU are an important part of this event!
Welcome to the 22nd Annual
Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey
Race for the Cure
“You are the Team Captain and
Together We are the Cure!”
Susan G. Komen Central and South
Jersey Race for the Cure
The Race for the Cure first came to New Jersey in 1994. In the
20+ years, this event has raised and invested over $17 million,
funding free mammograms and breast cancer education for
local underserved women and contributing to breast cancer
research around the world. 75% of proceeds generated by the
Race stays in the 13 New Jersey counties served by the Central
and South Jersey Affiliate. The remaining 25% goes to the
Susan G. Komen Award and Research Grant Programs support-
ing research, awards and educational and scientific programs
around the world.
The Impact of your Dollars in 2015
 23,000 educated about breast cancer and breast cancer
awareness
 8,000 referred for mammograms or screened on-site
 4,000 free mammograms for uninsured women
 250 diagnostic tests including biopsies and ultrasounds
 200 people provided with round trip transportation
assistance to mammogram appointments

Teams Take a Stand &
Make an Impact
Race teams are indispensable to our mission. There is power in
numbers when it comes to conquering this disease. Every team
member represents one more person fighting the fight and
hundreds of others that gain awareness as members share their
experience, ask for support and embrace loved ones in your team’s
activities.
A Komen Central and South Jersey Race for the Cure team is a group
of registered participants who join together for the Race season to
have fun, find support in their personal breast cancer missions and
raise funds to empower the work of the Central and South Jersey
Affiliate.
 Team members should officially register for the Race for the
Cure as a Runner, Walker or Sleep In for the Cure participant
online.
 Teams must comprise of 10 or more registered participants.
Fundraise individually and/or as a team.
 We encourage all teams to raise a minimum of $1,000.
 Designate your team in a “category:” Community or

T
eamwork - A team allows for the opportunity to volunteer talent, time, and resources together to make
a difference in their community. Support community involvement and join in the fight against breast
cancer by creating a team that will strive to success!
ducation - As a team, you motivate each other to learn about breast cancer and the importance of early
detection. You encourage each other to learn about your personal risk and encourage yearly
mammograms. Most importantly, you remind each other of Komen and its mission - to end breast
cancer forever.
wards - Make your ultimate fundraising goal to go above and beyond! Strive to build the largest team,
where every member participates and fundraises. Annual prizes are given out to teams that stand out!
otivation - Continue to encourage not only your teammates but also your community to advocate for
strong breast cancer public policy. Motivate each other to give your best efforts to reach team goals!
Remember, every donation is one step closer to finding a cure!

Fundraising: Getting Started
QUICK TIPS
 Anyone is a potential donor.
Never miss an opportunity!
 Ask people that you have daily
contact with or who you’ve
established a relationship
within one way or another.
 Start with the person whom
you think will give you the
largest donation, which will
establish a high baseline of
giving.
 A Special Occasion is a great
time to collect donations.
Instead of birthday gifts this
year, ask for a donation!
 Ask your doctor, dentist, vet or
chiropractor for a donation.
 Brainstorm with your team. Be
creative and think of things that
can involve the entire team.
Too often people just don’t
know how to get involved.
Bra Pong
Contest!
“Be creative, have fun and don't be
afraid to take something ordinary
and make it extraordinary!”

Share your experiences, passion, and reasons for fundraising, then ask them to support you. Host a game night with any of your favorite games (Monopoly, Scrabble, Poker, Bingo, Trivial Pursuit, etc.). Serve food and drinks. Ask for a suggested donation at the door. Contact the editor of your local newspaper or your company newsletter, to cover an interview about your team and include a request for support. Be sure to include instructions on how to donate to your team!
