1. Simple Hybrid Drive Layout for entry
level automobiles
January 2013
• The presentation is based on the recently granted German Patent
File No 10 2006 005 131.9
• This is a „teaser“ version of the presentation. The full presentation is
available upon request by sending a LinkedIn message.
2. • Goal: high efficiency hybrid technology for entry level vehicles – favor simplicity,
accept noticible transitions between modes and other rough edges
• Patented layout: combustion engine – electrically actuated clutch – two speed
gearbox – electric motor / generator – two speed gearbox – drive wheel link (see
next slide)
• The two speed gearboxes need to provide uninterrupted torque, typically
planetary type; the first one will have a narrow, the second a wider ratio of gear
ratio, to provide a total of four combinations
• The combustion engine and electric motor will typically be of similar power – each
is able to propel the vehicle by itself
• The next slides show the operation of the drive system at different battery charge
levels
3. • The full presentation illustrates how the control sytem interacts with the mechanical
components to achieve the goal of simplicity and effectiveness
