Narmada Bachao Andolan
“Development wanted, not destruction”
“we won't move, the dam won't be constructed”
 Narmada Bachao Andolan is the most powerful mass
movement, started in 1985, against the construction of hug
damn on the Narmada dam
What? When?
 Narmada is the India's Largest west flowing river, which supports a
large variety of people with distinguished culture and tradition ranging
from the indigenous (tribal) people inhabited in the jungles here to the
large number of rural population
About river Narmada
 The proposed Sardar Sarovar Dam and Narmada Sagar will displace
more than 2,50,000 people. The big fight is over the resettlement or the
rehabilitation of these people
 These two proposals are already under construction, supported by
US$550 million loan by the world bank
why?
Construction of Narmada River
Advantages Disadvantages
• Can expect production of
electricity of 1450 MW of
electricity
• Displacement of 2.50.000 people
from there states (Madhya
Pradesh, Maharashtra , Gujarat)
• Sardar sarovar alone would irrigate
almost 1.8 million hectors of land
in gujarat and an additional 73,000
hectars in the dry neighboring state
of Rajasthan
• Loss of agricultural land and forest
(approx. 37,000 hectares)
• More pure water to meet the
neeedd of about 1000 of villagers
• Destruction of flora and fauna
 Narmada Bachao Andolan was intitated by
MEDHA PATKAR.
 In 1985, after hearing about the sardar sarovar dam, medha patkar and
her colleagues visisted the project site and notices that project work being
checked
Who?
 The people who were going to be affected by the construction of the dam
given no information
 Patkar approached the Ministry of Environment to seek clarifications.
 She realized that the project was not sanctioned at all and wondered as to
how funds were even sanctioned by the World Bank.
 After several studies, they realized that the officials had overlooked the post
project problems.
Action of Medha Patkar
 She organized a 36-day solidarity march among the neighboring
states of the Narmada valley from Madhya Pradesh to the Sardar
Sarovar dam site.
 The march was resisted by the police
The protest
 In May 1990, Narmada Bachao Andolan organized a 2,000-
person, five-day sit-in at PM V. P. Singh's residence in New
Delhi, which convinced the Prime Minister to 'reconsider' the
project.
 In December 1990, approximately 6000 men and women began
the Narmada Jan Vikas Sangharsh Yatra (Narmada People's
Progress Struggle March), marching over 100 kilometres.
 In January 1991, Baba Amte and the seven-member team
began an indefinite hunger strike (continued for 22 days) and
committed to a sit-in unto death.
The protest
 Patkar’s actions did force the wrold bank to set up the morse
commission
 The world bank’s participation in these projects was cancelled
in 1993
End of protest
 adivasis, farmers, fish workers, labourers and others in the
Narmada valley along with the intellectuals including
environmentalists, human rights activists, Scientists,
academicians, artists, etc..
WHO PARTICIPATED ?
• The Sardar Sarovar Dam's construction began again in
1999. The height of the project was increased from 138
meters to 163 meters. It was inaugurated in 2017 by PM
Narendra Modi.
