4. Types of comparisons:
There are three types of comparisons:
1. Positive degree:
When a noun or pronoun is not compared we
use the basic form of an adjective.
Example:
Monty is a brave boy.
The adjective brave which denotes the simple
quality is said to be in Positive Degree.
5. Comparative degree:
• When the same quality is compared
between two people or groups we use
Comparative degree.
• Example:
Babies are happier than children.
• The adjective happier which tells us that
babies when compared to children has
more happiness is said to be in
Comparative Degree.
6. Superlative degree
• When the same quality is compared among
many persons or things, we use the
Superlative degree.
• Example:
• Rafflesia is the largest flower in the world.
• The adjective largest which tells us that of
all the flowers, Rafflesia has the highest
degree of largeness, is said to be in
Superlative degree.
7. Rules to rememberwhileusing comparatives:
1.The Comparative Degree is
generally followed by the conjunction
than; as,
• Shimla is colder than Ooty.
• Mount Everest is higher than Mount
Kanchenjunga.
• Soma runs faster than John.
