16. 16
• It include polymer recrystallization, or denaturation of protein structures
and exposure to ultra violet rays which refers to the polymer breakdown by
photo oxidation releasing different chemical compounds and radicals,
decreasing molecular weight leading to polymer destruction converting it
into more hazardous form (micro and nano plastic)
• Thermal degradation is similar to the photo degradation
• Photo degradation includes chemical reactions occurring on outer surface
while thermal degradation occurs on the greater surface of the polymer
Physical degradation
17. Chemically assisted degradation of polymers is a type of polymer
degradation that involves a change of the polymer properties due to a
chemical reaction with the polymer’s surroundings. There are many
different types of possible chemical reactions causing degradation
however most of these reactions result in the breaking of double bonds
within the polymer structure.

Chemical degradation
18. • Biodegradation refers to the degradation or deterioration of complex
organic polymer into simpler components by the help of microbes
• this is comparatively more suitable method than physical and
chemical degradation as it has least or no hazardous impacts has
relatively fast and efficient degradation potential to and is
environmental friendly technique, but yet not practically applied at
commercial scale
