1. Representation
Riley;
To represent age, I used a young male artist that was very stereotypical of the genre. His clothing
was a snap back with chains, tight jeans and a baseball jacket. This shows him as being young and
very in with the modern fashion, this also represented the ethnicity, as he is black, the way he is
dressed is very stereotypical of a young black person, this ties in with genre, as most of the artists
are of that ethnicity, so it is very conventional of him to be associated with the hip-hop genre and
fits in well with my magazine cover. When looking at the mise-en-scene of the hip-hop genre, he
wears the exact same as what they wear, this is a young aged fashion, so it represents him as being
young and masculine. The colours he is wearing are mainly a male colour, so this portrays him as
being very masculine and powerful, this is also portrayed using a low angled shot, which gives him
the power and that is very stereotypical of the hip-hop genre, as they are mainly males. The items of
clothing, make him look working to upper class, but they younger generation, as they are all metal
and bold clothing, this gives the sense that they are new and in fashion. The lighting used, is high
key, the use of this makes him stand out and makes him look bolder. The fonts used
around him are very young, easy to read and are big and bold, this makes him look like
he is important and then that makes him stand out. Riley: Low angled shot
and stereotypical
clothing and body
language of the hip-hop
genre. High key lighting
makes him stand out and
look bolder than the
other models.
Jack Nelson;
Jack is portrayed as a young, less powerful male, this isn’t stereotypical, but the reason
for this is because he is new to the hip-hop scene, so doesn’t have a big name in the
genre, this is portrayed using a high angled shot, this makes him look like he doesn’t have any
power, unlike Riley. He is wearing youngish clothes, but isn’t linked with the hip-hop genre, this
creates the effect that he is young as he hasn’t realised the change in style that other artists have,
and therefore he is naïve. He is wearing typical clothes that a white person would wear, baggy,
bright, but subtle clothes, as he doesn’t want to stand out as much as the black artists. This makes
the black ethnicity look more confident and therefore comes across as being of higher power than
the white people. He is portrayed as being a typical white boy, who is masculine, but isn’t as
masculine in the way that Riley is, he is more masculine in the normal world, but in the hip-hop
world, Riley is by far more masculine.
Jack Nelson: High angled shot and un-stereotypical
clothing for the hip-hop genre, casual body language.
High key lighting, but this makes him look like he is
trying to stand out too much.
