COMPUTER NETWORK CLASSIFICATION
A group of computer connected in some fashion in order to share resources.network with enhanced
storage and server-based processing power provide
users with greater functionally and security than independent or stand-alone machines.
Network can be classified based on:
*Physical size: They can be classified as local area network(LANs),metropolitan aREA NETWORK
(MANs),or wide area networks(WANs).
*Topology:The physical layout of computers, cables, and other components of a network.Topologies(the
manner and complexity of interconnections)
include the bus topology, star topology, ring topology, and mesh topology.
*Security:Networks can be based on workgroups,in which all machines control their own security,or
they can be based on servers(such as domain-
based microsoft window 2000/2003 networks).
*Network architecture:For examples, networks can be classified as ethernet, token ring,or fiber
distributed data interface(FDDI)networks.
Network architecture is an umbrealla term describing the topologies, access methods, protocols, and
other technologies used for networkings.
The following are examples of network architecture for local area networks(LANs),
Ethernet:By far the most popular network architecture for LANs.ethernet supports speeds of
10,100,and 1000mbps and is based on the contention
method of media access control.
Token ring:an architecture developed by IBM.Legacy IBM networks supports speeds of 4and
16mbps,although vendors are working on standard for
much higher speeds.
Apple talk:An architecture developed by APPLE for its macintosh platform thatgoverns the
communications between computer on a networks.
These rules include guidelines that regulate the following characteristics of a networks:access
method,allowed physical topologies,types
of cabling, and speed of data transfer.network can be classified based on the protocol they use
ex:internet protocol(IP),internetwork packet exchange(IPX),system network architecture
(SNA),appletalk networks,and so on.
A network consist of two or more computer that are linked in order to share resources(such as printer
and CD-ROMs),exchange files,allows electronic
communication. The Computer on a network may be linked through cables, telephones lines, radio
waves,satellite,or infrared lights beams.
Networks is a group of computer and associated peripheral devices connected by a communication
channel capable of sharing files and others
resources among several users.A networks can range from a peer-to-peer network
