Abstract
The study probed the actual language barriers to ESLL (English as Secondary Language) for adults
as well as explored the learners’ perception towards these barriers. In this case study design,
learners’ unstructured interviews of the participants studying in a UK based course “speaking to
others” by NCFE (Northern Council for Further Education ,UK)were conducted at CISD(College of
International Skills Development) Lahore Pakistan. The study investigated the perceived and
observed barriers in ESLL for adults who were the school teachers of a renowned private school
of Lahore. The diagnostic tests , interviews and observations were the research tools to find the
results .The findings showed that majority of the participants faced limited vocabulary, lack of
confidence, limitedresourcesand unsupportive environment which werethe mainbarriersinESLL
whereas the significance of self-motivation and spoken culture were considered by rest of the
participants. However, the comparison between the participants’ perception and actual data has
opened new horizons for second language learning for adults.
