Three year media program plan
1. Three Year Media Program Plan
LM 510 Summer 2015
Dr. Betty Morris
Kelly Lockridge
Research has shown that strong library media programs increase student
achievement. In addition, student achievement is higher in schools where the
library media center and the available resources are used more frequently,
both by individual students and whole classes.
During the next three year, three programs will be implemented to have an
enhanced reading experience. The first year, one program will be
implemented to begin the efforts to strengthen the teacher and media
specialist collaborative partnership (decorate a pumpkin as your favorite
character). The second year, a program will be added to enhance parent
involment in selecting resources for the library, it will also enhance student’s
excitement about a bookand gives them a sense of ownership. The third
year, Battle of the books will be added, a program that will encourage
students to read and remember information about the plots, characters, and
settings of the books. Every question asked in a battle is answered by the
title and author of the book. It is a fun, academic-based competition that
hwill have students reading and remembering information about books.
These programs will be implemented in the fall of each year.
Year 1

Great Pumpkin Character Contest. Each classroomwill be given a pumpkin

their favorite character. The decorated pumpkin will be brought to the
media center to be set on display. Classes will be brought to the library to
see all of their favorite bookcharacters.

Year 2
Birthday Book Club
Parents are offered an opportunity twice a year to select a gift bookfor the
media center honoring his or her child. A variety of titles are chosenby the
media specialist and the PTO helps to promote this event to parents. A
bookplate honoring the child is placed in the book. The media specialist
delivers the bookselected for the birthday honoree to the child’s classroom
3. where they are formally presented with the book. The birthday celebrant gets
to read the new bookfirst, and then the bookbecomes part of the library
collection. The student will have their picture taken with the new bookand it
will appear in the schoolnewsletter. This program promotes reading and
helps to grow your collection in an inexpensive way.
Year 3
The third year, Battle of the books will be added, a program that will
encourage students to read and remember information about the plots,
characters, and settings of the books. Every question asked in a battle is
answered by the title and author of the book. A booklist of titles for each
grade level will be given at the beginning of the schoolyear and again after
Christmas. There will be a bookbattle twice a year. There will be one grade
level winner for each class. Students that wish to participate must read all
the books on the booklist and submit an application to the media specialist.
Students that win the bookbattle will receive bookcertificates for the next
bookfair. Their pictures will also be taken and placed on the LMC website
and in the schoolnewsletter. It is a fun, academic-based competition that
will have students reading and remembering information about books.
