Cooperative Learning
with established
Roles

What is it?
Cooperative Learning is small-group learning. Small groups
of students work together on a common task.
Five Basic Elements
for Successful learning:
1. Positive Interdependence- Students feels responsible for their own effort.
2. Face-to-Face Interaction- Students support one another.
3. Individual and Group Accountability- Each student is responsible for doing their
own part and the group is accountable for meeting their goal.
4. Group Behaviors- Students learn to work with others.
5. Group Processing- Students analyze their own and the group’s ability to work
together.
Examples of Roles in the group:
 Organizer - Provides overall structure
 Recorder- Writes down important information
 Timekeeper- Keeps the group on task and on time
 Encourager- Models appropriate social skills
 Spokesperson- Represents the groups work to the rest of the class

Why is it important?
When cooperative learning is implemented well, it encourages achievement, student
discussion, active learning, student confidence, and motivation.
