2. At such a technical, fast-paced, and hands-on university like Full Sail, the last thing I expected
was to be juggling assignments from an English class. The class definitely reminded me that no
matter how high you get on the corporate ladder it is important to remember the basics, whether
you currently use them or not, you never know what your future will ask of you. I also got the
opportunity to brush up on my citation skills and enhance my writing skills.
To start off, I expected a typical English class where the instructor would ask us to write 3 plus
page essays about uninteresting topics. The grading rubric would be unnecessarily harsh, and in
the end, wouldn’t matter because if the essays don’t meet the professor’s standards then you
failed. This class completely flipped my expectations on its head. The assignments correlated to
pop culture which is a big part of entertainment which is the industry that a majority of the
students will be going into.
Secondly, I was pretty confident in my writing skills before taking this course. I didn’t think I
was J.K. Rowling or anything but I knew that I was a decent writer and that I was open to taking
in anything that would help me fine-tune that skill. Now that I have finished the course, I can
honestly say that it has made me a stronger writer. My material over this last month has been
very focused on whatever the topic was. I got really good at finding out an author’s thesis
statement and then picking main points correlated to it and then finding supporting details to
back up the points. This course was also the first time that I learned about APA citation. I admit
that after a whole month I still have not perfected it and my grade somewhat reflects that.
However, my improvements can be seen in the latest assignments that have required that type of
citation.
Lastly, I can’t speak on my professor’s behalf but I do feel like I’ve met the class requirements.
No matter how I went about it the point of any class is to learn, grow, and improve, I felt like I
3. did exactly that. I am especially proud of how much my writing has progressed. I can now
confidently say that I can write a content-rich summary about an article and not veer off into
irrelevant points or use run-sentences or over saturate it with my own voice and opinions. I also
learned how to get out the habit of writing in one big text block and to articulate my work
efficiently through paragraphs. My previous Creative Presentation class taught me different ways
of speaking on a topic without sounding bland or like I’m overwhelming my audience so I tried
to apply those skills in my writing. I know for a fact they will help me in my career when I have
to pitch in a meeting or to other companies.
In conclusion, his course has helped me improve my writing and analysis skills a lot. My
presentation skills are now more precise than they were before because I understand the
importance of not veering off-topic too much and not pouring too much of myself into an
assignment. I also comprehend APA citation better now. I owe all of that to this course.
