• FIRST PHASE : (PRE-INDEPENDENCE) the first phase started in1889 when the first well was
dugged in digboi in assam for the crude production. For the next 60 year the oil was
produced only from this oil field india.
• SECOND PHASE : (POST-INDEPENDENCE) it started after thr independent when in1955 in
geological survey of india (GSI) , a petroleum branch was opened, which in1956 formed into
oil and natural gas commission, which was assigned by the government of india the
responsibility of exploration and production of petroleum and gas field in india. As a result
of exploration work in 1953 in naharkatia and in 1956 moran (assam) two oil field were
discovered.
• THIRD PHASE : it is connected with indo-soviet economic co-operation, as a result of which
soviet and Indian geologist(ONGC) discovered oil field in ankleswer (1960),kalol (1961),
salon (1962) , and a gas field in cambay (1958) , all in the state of Gujrat and rudrasagar and
lakwa oil in assam.
• FOURTH PHASE : it started with the discovery of Bombay high oil field in the offshore
region. From 1974 the commercial production of oil from Bombay high startred .
3. THE OFFSHORE BASSEINS ARE :
KUTCH 28000 Sq. kms
SAURASTRA 32000 Sq kms
BOMBAY HIGH 140000 Sq kms
MAHANADI 12040 Sq kms
WEST BENGAL 28800 Sq kms
CAUVERY 26320 Sq kms
ANDAMANS 3500 Sq kms
KERALA 81480 Sq kms

4. MUMBAI HIGH GAS UTILISATION :
• The associated gas from Mumbai high is piped to ONGC, URAN terminal near Mumbai through
203 km pipeline through arebian sea where the crude stabilization and gas fractionation is done
amd LPG produced is piped to bharat petroleum and Hindustan petroleum to handle marketing
to domestic and industrial consumers.
• To obtain the maximum benefit – the Mumbai high gas is being fractionated into following four
fractions:
a. Methane rich fraction – for use as feed stocks to fertilizer industry.
b. Petrochemical feed stocks containing ethane and propane fraction.
c. LPG or domestic cooking gas containing propane and butane fractions.
d. Heavier hydrocarbons mostly pentane hexane.

6. ONGC EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES :
• Apart from exporation in india, ONGC also undertakes exploratory and production work outside india. In the year
1973 ONGC made an agreement with ‘ Iraq national oil co.’ explorarion of oil field in the southern part of Iraq
comprising of 4195 thousand sq. kms.
• A subsidirary of ONGC ‘hydrocarbon india pvt ltd’ has taken part with American ,Italian and Iranian oil companies in
the oil exporation and drilling work in Iraq . The oil fields discovered by india in iran along with foreign firms , india
got 13rd of its product share.
• According to soviet geologist prof. kalinin the potential oil capacity within the territory of india is about 4000 million
tonnes and in the offshore area about 1 billion ton. The potential natural gas capacity is estimated by prof. kalinin as
about 2000000 millions
• The ONGC research and development activities are carried out through its three existing institutions viz. K.D. Malviya
institute of petroleum at Dehradun. Institute of reservoirs studies at Ahmedabad and the the institute of drilling
technology at Dehradun . Two more institutes of ONGC are institute of engineering and ocean technology and
institute of production technology. ONGC is possessing its own seismic vessels , drill ships, jackup rings ,
multipurpose support vessels , helicopters , LPG plants, well platforms , onshore drilling rings, pumps,
compressors,etc.

7. GAS PRODUCTION IN INDIA :
• Natural gas is emerging as most attractive oil substitute in india . A gas grid has been conceptualised for effective
utilisation of gas for fertilizers , petro chemicals industries and for power generation, “gas authority of india Ltd”
(GAIL) has been formed.
• In 1984 – 85 about 43% of offshore gas were being flared as unexpected increase in yield of associated gas as a
results of uptrained in Mumbai high crude production during 1982-85 could not be fully utillised as gas fractionation
plant was commissioned only in 1982 – 83 and out of 12 million of gas produced from Mumbai high, actual
utilisation was about 8 million and the remaining is flared . In assam out of 6 million of gas produced only about 3
million was utilised. The loss from such flaring runs to several crores of rupees as 70% of gas consisting of methane
which is a precious feedstock for fertilizer of the remaining 27% consisting of ethane butane and propane which are
feedstock for petrochemicals .
• Mumbai high offshore is the india main oil and gas production regions . ONGC has executed many process many
process platforms ,several risers , several pipilines in these regions . Many foreign companies like Hyundai, Daewoo ,
Samsung , Kawasaki of japan, cooper ross and many Indian companies like ESSAR OIL , saw pipes LTD etc. have done
lot of installation construction and project work.
