GARFINCKEL’S was the specialty store in Washington,
DC known for luxury brands, the first in the United States
to sell Hermes. Exclusive arrangements: Courreges,
Hermes, Givenchy. Mentored by brilliant merchants,
surrounded by the finest merchandise, best manners
and customer service, it elevated my understanding of
what creates style and gave me a foundation of knowledge
in retail business systems, inventory control and visual
merchandising. An intensive Management Development
Program of ninety-six hours spanning twelve weeks of
seminars exposed me to all aspects of the business of
specialty retailing.

The success of Ballard Designs is due largely to
exclusive merchandise, which is at the heart of its
brand. Product Development with overseas sources
offers innovative proprietary products with higher
margins. These winners are now produced in China.
Three products I developed more than 20 years ago
defined and influenced new categories and continue
to perform at the top of their class:
• Oversized Message Boards
• Original Home Office
• Benton Étagère

Collaborating with internationally renowned landscape
architect, author and artist Ryan Gainey, resulted in a
well-received 16-piece collection. My part was editing,
sketching and developing specs, modifying designs for
those too fragile to reproduce, monitoring the import
process of handmade designs with overseas artisans, con-
trolling production costs, sampling and stock projections.

Working with a team of designers and artisans in
India, China, The Caribbean and The Philippines,
honed cross cultural skills. Articulating the detail of
design, when never working hand-in-hand, required
inventing methods of long distance communication.

depended on me to complement fabric selections with pattern
