THE USE AND GRAMMAR OF COMPARATIVES

2. FUNCTION
•Comparative adjectives are used
to compare differences between
the two objects they modify
(larger, smaller, faster, higher).
They are used in sentences
where two nouns are compared.

3. ADJECTIVES RULES
• If the adjective is one syllable, you must add -er.
For example small – smaller; nice – nicer.
• If the adjective is one syllable with consonant-vowel-consonant, you
must double the last consonant and add -er
For example big – bigger; hot - hotter

4. • If the adjective has two syllables, but ends in -y, you must
change the end to -ier.
For example lucky – luckier; happy – happier.
• With other English adjectives of two syllables and more, you
can‘t change their endings. Instead, you should use
more/less + adjective.
For example: handsome – more/less handsome;
beautiful – more/less beautiful

5. GRAMMAR RULES
Noun (subject) + verb to be + comparative adjective + than + noun (object).
Examples:
Ships are more expensive than boats
A boat is cheaper than a ship

6. REMEMBER!!
When you compare two things, use 'than'.
"She's younger than me.“
"This exercise is more difficult than the last one.“
