10. What How Why
Introduction to the lesson and the aims for
the lesson.
Present and explain what we will do in todays
lesson. Write the aims on the board.
This way pupils will be prepared for the lesson
and know what is going to happen, so nothing
comes as a surprise.
Draw a mind map and get the pupils to say
things that happens in the book.
Draw the mind map on the board. Ask the
pupils if they can say different things that
happens in the book.
To refresh their minds so they can remember
the story they have read and help each other if
someone has forgotten some parts.
Go through some of the most important
themes from the story.
Mention of the themes and ask if the pupils can
refer to them, and say a part from the story
which the themes is visible.
So pupils can reflect upon the themes. Think
about them and share their thoughts with each
other.
Draw lines from one/two of the themes in
the book with other texts, the real world
and their life.
The teacher writes on the board while the
pupils write in their own books. Ask if they
know about other stories which contain the
same theme etc.
In this way, pupils will understand that even if
two stories contain the same theme, they are
different. They will see that themes are
important for us as well.
Summary. Talk about what we have done
this lesson and look at the aims for the
lesson.
Talk with the pupils and ask them if they have
any last questions. Talking about today’s aims
and if we managed to reach them.
To have a ‘end’ to the lesson and get the pupils
together as one again.
o Aims for lesson 1: Know about the importance of themes. Can mention some themes from The Fault in Our Stars and
have a discussion about them and see if you can draw lines from real life.
11. What How Why
Talk about what the lesson is going to be
about and the aims for the lesson.
Present and explain what we will do in todays
lesson. Write the aims on the board.
This way pupils will be prepared for the lesson
and know what is going to happen, so nothing
comes as a surprise.
Go through what the pupils
know/remember about Amsterdam and
the USA. Discuss what they know and find
some similarities and differences between
the Netherlands, The USA and Norway.
Pupils write down what they remember from
the book and what they already know. As a
class we have a discussion where the teacher
writes down what the pupils say on the board,
so they can get more information if needed.
So the pupils will be more aware of the
differences and similarities of the three
countries. Not only culture, but the country
itself.
The pupils shall start writing an essay
about the differences and the similarities
between two of the three counties. They
will continue at the essay home.
Pupils start writing an essay from the notes
they have. If they have a computer each, they
will start writing there, if not, they will use their
writing book.
So the pupils will get writing practise in English,
and use their own notes as they write.
Summary. Talk about what this lesson has
been about and if it adds up to the aims.
Tell them that the essay is their
homework.
Talk with the pupils about the lesson and how
far they have gotten on their essays. Asking if
some of them have further questions bout the
essay.
To get them together as a class again when the
lesson is done.
o Aims for lesson 2: Know about differences and similarities between The Netherlands, The USA and Norway. You
should feel comfortable to talk about it and can explain the main differences.
