Before the DonutxRunners
were a group of thirty-plus people
from Southern and Northern
California, it was just two best
friends who decided to meet
up after the first day of their Fall
Semester for some boba. Alan
and I started meeting weekly on
Monday nights after class to hang
out. Eventually, we started inviting
people. Those people then started
coming regularly. At the time, there
were probably only four or five of us
each Monday night.
One night, bored of sitting around
in a parking lot all evening, we
decided to drive to
the San Pedro Fish
Market at midnight.
The following
week, we decided
on donuts instead
of sitting around in
a parking lot that
smelled like fish.
We found ourselves
at the Krispy Kreme
in Orange, a bunch
of kids hanging out
and eating donuts. Jokingly, I
called ourselves Donut Runners
as a silly take on Japanese street
racing teams.
People ask me if the
DonutxRunners are some kind
of team or crew, and I just tell
them that we’re a family. We
all firmly believe that our cars
are more than just tools to
transport ourselves; our cars
are extensions of our beings.
We don’t allow popularity to
take precedence over our
passion for cars nor do
we allow it to dictate
what we do to them.
We do our best to stay
true to ourselves. Most
importantly, we enjoy
one another’s company.
We joke that if we were
to write a list to describe
the DonutxRunners it
would read “Tea, donuts,
chill nights, good people,
casual groping, and
sometimes cars.” We hang out,
we drive, we eat donuts, then
we hang out some more. This is
what DonutxRunners is about.
“We don’t allow
popularity to take
precedence over
our passion for
cars...”
