The document outlines a 5-day fire safety lesson plan for preschool students. On day 1, students will learn their classroom's evacuation plan and watch a fire drill video. Day 2 focuses on identifying the sound of a smoke alarm through a podcast and bead craft. Day 3 explains the importance of smoke alarms on every floor. Day 4 teaches the emergency number 911 through songs. Day 5 introduces the class mascot Sparky the Fire Dog and a visit from the fire department. The goal is for students to understand fire safety procedures by the end of the week.
2. Analyze the learner
Every student is a preschooler, between the ages of 3-4. There are 18 students all together with
the majority race being White Americans but there are 2 African Americans, and 3 Chinese
students. I will be teaching them about fire safety.
3. Main Objectives
My Preschool class will learn about fire safety in a five day time span. Students will know how to
respond to the sound of a smoke alarm by going over the emergency exit plan, watching a video,
then they will practice it. Students will identify the sound of a smoke alarm after listening to a
podcast of one. Students will make a craft to demonstrate their understanding of the sound of
smoke alarms. The students will know the emergency number 911 by reading them a book and
teaching them sing along songs with 100% accuracy at the end of the week.
4. Day by Day Breakdown
Day 1: Students will know how to respond to the sound of a smoke alarm.
◦ Gather the students on the carpet provided for circle time. Activate prior knowledge by asking the students what
they know about smoke alarms. Show the students the smoke alarm; and explain they are used to keep us safe in our
homes. Let the students watch a video of a school having a fire drill. Show students where the ‘meeting place’ would
be incase of a fire drill in the classroom. Activate the real smoke alarm and have them line up where the meeting
place is. Children are not permitted to go back on the carpet without permission it is safe. Practice making the Beep-
Beep-Beep noise smoke alarms make.
Day 2: Students will identify the sound of a smoke alarm.
◦ Remind the children the sound of the smoke alarm has three beeps and a pause. Let them listen to a podcast of a
smoke alarm. Provide the class with string, red beads, and white beads at each of their tables. Each red bead
represent the “beep” of the smoke alarm and the white beads represent the pause of the smoke alarm. They will
string the beads on accordingly to represent the beeps and can wear it as a necklace or bracelet. It represents the
sound patterns of the smoke alarm. After they are finished they will go to the carpet and repeat how a smoke alarm
sounds using their craft. I will reinforce that when they hear that sound it is not safe and they need to get out of the
building immediately and go to the meeting spot.
5. Day 3: Why it is important to have a smoke alarm on every floor of the home.
◦ Discuss that it is important to not only have a smoke alarm in every home, but to have a smoke alarm in
every bedroom and on every level of the home, including the basement. Ask the children why it is
important to have a smoke alarm in their bedroom. Record their answers and discuss how a smoke
alarm wakes you up in case of an emergency and tells you to leave your home.
Day 4: The students will know the emergency number 911.
◦ Students will sing songs that teach them about the emergency number, 911. The class will listen and
then sing along to two songs regarding fire safety and the number to call incase of an emergency.
Day 5: Introduce Sparky the Fire Dog to the class.
◦ I will read the students the book Sparky the Fire Dog. Introduce sparky as the class mascot for the fire
safety lessons they will be learning. I will contact the county fire department and bring Sparky to visit
the classroom. Sparky will hand out stickers with the emergency number 911 on them for the students
to wear and place by the telephone at home.
