Gonococcal arthritis is a rare complication of the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea that causes painful inflammation of the joints and tissues. It is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae and can be transmitted during childbirth if the mother is infected or through multiple sexual partners and unsafe sex practices. Symptoms include red, swollen, tender and painful joints with limited range of motion, as well as fever and skin lesions. Diagnosis involves testing throat cultures, cervical smears, urine analysis and blood work, while treatment consists of draining fluid from infected joints, using splints for immobilization, and administering antibiotics like ceftriaxone and azithromycin or doxycycline.
