The respiratory system has several main organs that work together to allow us to breathe. The lungs are the largest organ and work with tiny air sacs called alveoli to absorb oxygen into the bloodstream and release carbon dioxide. Pollution and smoking can damage the respiratory system by affecting the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles which are tubes that carry air to and from the lungs. The diaphragm and larynx also play important roles in breathing.
