PAINTING
EARTH’S NATURAL RESOURCES
AN INTRODUCTION TO OBSERVATIONAL & DEVELOPED PAINTING SKILLS USING
TRADITIONAL AND NON-TRADITIONAL PAINTING MEDIUMS AND TOOLS.

2. UNIT INTENTION:
• To help you develop a connection between you, as the artist and earth’s natural resources.
• To develop your knowledge of what earth’s natural resources are and how we can use
these as inspiration and in our art.
• To develop your observational painting skills.
• To develop your painting skills with various mediums (traditional and non-traditional
mediums and tools)
• To complete
• 1. a mind map of brainstorming, exploring and considerations.
• 2. a series of photos of earth’s natural resources images.
• 3. a series of experimental observational paintings with various mediums.
• 4. to write an artist statement of your proposed nature painting.
• 5. to complete a nature painting using various mediums.
• 6. to create a painting inspired by Rosetta Santucci and Australian Indigenous artists.
3. ASSESSMENT:
THIS PAINTING UNIT IS WORTH 50% OF YOUR OVERALL SEMESTER
1 RESULT.
IT INCLUDES:
* TASK 1: MIND MAP
* TASK 3: OBSERVATIONAL EXPERIMENTAL PAINTINGS.
*TASK 4: ARTIST STATEMENT
*TASK 5: NATURE PAINTING.

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING….

• How can we use these in our art?
• Do you know of any artists that
reference earths natural resources in
their artworks?
5. THROUGHOUT THIS UNIT YOU
WILL NEED TO REFER TO THE
ART ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES
• A handout , with more information is in
your sketchbooks and should be on your iPad
to refer to.
• They are an important part of all of your
creative steps.
6. TASK 1: MIND MAP.
IN YOUR SKETCHBOOKS CREATE 1 PAGE OF BRAIN STORMING WHAT EARTHS NATURAL RESOURCES MEAN
TO YOU.
• Include:
• *heading (Earths Natural Resources).
• *photos (you have taken / from google / from
magazines)
• *thumbnail sketches
• Objects
• *notations explaining the images.
• *relate to the art elements of colour, line,
shape, pattern, texture, movement.
• Arrange in visually pleasing way. Submit for
assessment.
7. TASK 2: PHOTO EXPEDITION.
• Today we venture around the art room and our school on a
discovery tour of earth’s natural resources.
• Using your iPad take photos of what you consider to fit into the
category of Earth’s natural resources. Reflect on your mind map
for ideas.
• Take as many photos as you would like and consider close up
shots, distance shots, focus on the art elements, consider
composition, focus on one specific part, make each image as
creatively interesting as possible.
• Arrange a few of these into a pic collage with annotations
explaining the images.
• Name and submit to your teacher.
8. TASK 3: OBSERVATIONAL PAINTINGS.
LET’S EXPERIMENT, OBSERVE AND GET
MESSY.
• Time to paint.
• A variety of objects will be offered to you to paint using a variety
of traditional and non-traditional painting mediums and tools.
Some examples you can see in the picture.
• You will have short periods of time to paint quick sketches and
longer periods.
• Try to focus on capturing the main shapes, lines, textures,
patterns you see in front of you.
• DRAW WHAT YOU SEE – don’t make it up. These tasks are to
extend you observation skills as well as your painting skills.
• Keep them all in your folder for assessment.
• Have fun!!!!!!!!
9. TASK 4:
ARTIST’S
STATEMENT
We will begin a nature
painting next, using
the mind map, photos,
observational
paintings and
experiences for
inspiration.
Write a statement
saying….
*what materials you
would like to use?
*what tools you would
like to use? E.g. brush,
stick.
What imagery will
your painting be
based on, be about?
E.g. trees, aerial view,
close up, movements?
What style of painting
will you aim for? E.g.
realist, semi-abstract?
How will you make
your painting an
authentic connection
to the theme of
earth’s natural
resources.
Submit for assessment
to your teacher.
10. TASK 5: NATURE PAINTING
• Reflect on all of the tasks you have completed this term and select an image or a combination of
images to create a nature painting.
• Sketch lightly onto A3 white paper to begin.
• Consider the different paint materials you would like to use e.g. coffee, food colourings,
beetroot juice, inks.
• Block in the shapes of the main objects and the background first.
• Layer and detail to completion.
• Consider detailing with fine liner.
• Submit for assessment.
16. TASK 6: PAINTING INSPIRED BY ROSETTA SANTUCCI AND
AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS ARTISTS.
• Create an aerial landscape scene inspired by the style of Santucci and Australian
Indigenous artists.
• Ensure you have clear, repeated, organic shapes.
• Consider only using warm or cool colours.
• Like your nature drawing sketch lightly first then paint.
• Focus on the art elements in your composition.
