Reflection script don't shelve the teacher librarian
1. A.2.3 Reflection Script-Juli Porflit-27 February 2015
Content
When reviewing the School Librarian Standards, I approached
them through the eyes of a teacher. I am not currently in the role
of librarian but am anxious to take on this new title. One thing I
hope to never loose, as a librarian, is what it was like to be in the
classroom. Once I saw the standard that spoke about collaboration
between the teacher and the librarian I knew that is where I wanted
to focus. Building the relationship of partner teaching with the
classroom teacher, I feel is essential in creating student success on
the campus. There are so many demands in the classroom and if
we as librarians help to carry the load and plan alongside the
classroom teacher to meet the objectives, student success will be
our outcome.
Process
I wanted my video to represent all the positive aspects to
collaborative planning between the teacher and the librarian. I
wanted to find a meme that was catchy and memorable and would
represent the librarian’s role. “Don’t shelve the teacher librarian”
seemed appropriate to trying something new where the teachers
could look into or “check out” all the possibilities planning
together could have. The images I choose through an advance
Google search allowed me show the librarian just sitting on the
shelf. Other images showed the opposite of leaving the librarian to
tend to only things inside the library, instead showing collaboration
and the power of working together.
Audience Feedback
I posted my video to Facebook, Twitter, and sent out private
emails on February 22, 2015. My family is full of elementary
school educators; mostly they are the ones who responded to this
project. I received comments back from principals to classroom
teachers to paraprofessionals. I received positive feedback that
2. the video was technically put together very nicely. Several
commented that the text size font was too small. Another
commented, “Is there any way for you to give suggestions on how
we can become better at teaching collaboratively?” Changing the
YouTube link to an actual embedded video was another request.
After reading all the feedback and reviewing the video several
times, I made the following adjustments. Enlarging the font and
changing the placement and timing on several of the frames, made
it easier to read the text. After trying to get permission to embed
the YouTube video from the Colorado State Library, I finally
discovered that it was open for public use through Creative
Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed). Having the
YouTube video actually a part of the presentation gave a real life
example to the point I am advocating for: Don't shelve your
teacher librarian, instead check them out to see all the amazing
possibilities collaborative planning between the classroom teacher
and the teacher/librarian can have for our students.
I hope this multimedia presentation displays a good case to make
effective change on our school campuses in the daily jobs of our
teachers, librarians, administration and students.
