2. BLUMLER AND KATZ
Blumler and Kats suggest that audiences made
choices about how and when they consumed
media texts and other media products . They
then categorized the ways and reasons why
audiences consume media texts.
Now which one sapply to my music video
“Dreams”
3. ESCAPISM
Media audiences may decide to watch my music video “Dreams” as a
form of escapism and entertainment. What I have produced should
entertain audiences, audiences should enjoy it. They should get some
sort of 'escapism' which helps them forget about their worries or
problems for a short period.
My music video does this by showing a media audience a narrative for
them to watch and get involved with ,it also provided the characters
of Katie and Luke for them to get involved with and care about
allowing them to forget their problems and focus on Katie and Luke's
troubled relationship and “escape” into the media narrative I have
provided for them. I feel that my music video does this well due to the
complex narrative that requires an active audience as the music video
includes enigma and symbolism for the audience to grasp and
understand.
4. SOCIAL INTERACTION
My video creates social interaction which is the
ability of a media text to create a topic of
conversation between people. My music video
can spark debates, enjoyment and creates new
topics of discussion between people, I did this
by putting a enigma in the video as well as
making the narrative a relatable one as many
people have experiences with relationships. The
way we filmed the video with sections that
make you question whether it was all a dream
also sparks conversation and does it very well.
5. BARTHES FIVE CODES
Part of Barthes' theory was a series of 5 narrative codes, integral to interpreting media
narratives. He claimed that all media texts displayed at least one, if not more, of these 5
narrative codes. He described each code as follows:
Enigma Code - a mystery or hook to be solved for or by the audience. The ambiguity of the
enigma code draws the audience in by invoking curiosity. Unanswered enigmas frustrate
the audience, as well as creating a active audience.
Action Code - action and suspense used traditionally for escapism to entertain the
audience and immerse them in the text.
Semantic Code - elements of the text which imply, suggest or refer to additional meanings
in the media text. These are called Semes. Semes connote an extra meaning aside from the
literal denotation. Commonly found in open meaning media texts.
Symbolic Code - this code is about the eponymous symbols which can be found in media
texts. Symbolic codes are called Signifiers are used to convey meaning through symbolism,
as well as emphasizing character development, contrasts and tension.
Referential Code - this code deals with references within a media text to an external body
of knowledge, such as historic, scientific or cultural references. Can also consist of
intertextuality and elements of meta-narrative.
6. ENIGMA CODE
In my video, I present the audience with an
enigma in the very first minute if Luke is really
there or not, throughout the whole video there
are moments designed to make the audience
question this. This served the purpose of
drawing the audience in and to make then
engage with the video and create an active
audience. I feel like the video this very well,
During TA research many people said they felt
the need to watch on.
7. SYMBOLIC CODE
In my video, I used shots of text messages for two
reasons.
Firstly I was able to get across a lot of the narrative of
the video in a short space of time due to being able to
show text. from my TA research I found this did help the
audience understand the plot of the video. Secondly it
symbolically represented modern day relationships as
many of modern day relationships are taking place
online and through texts rather than face to face.
I feel that the shots of the text messages made the video
more relatable to a modern day young audience.
8. STRAUSS- BINARY OPPOSITION
Strauss’s theory makes use of the polar opposite e.g. hero and
the villain and black and white for example. I planned to use
Strauss’s theory to help Katie come across as more sympathetic
and vulnerable to the audience and to make Luke seem more
villainous to the audience. The main goal of using this theory
was to make the audience root and care for Katie and to make
them dislike Luke.
By dressing Katie in lighter clothing like blues and bright denim
jackets an have her act innocent and head over heels in love
with Luke and then have Luke who is dressed in darker colours
like dark greens and black act not as interested to her it pushes
the audience to dislike Luke.
I feel like this did show in the final video as Luke did come
across as the villain of the video however not to a large extent.
