The Mississippi Project
Our Story
In December 2018 - 5 friends were attracted by the challenge to become the fastest team to row the Atlantic. After 36 days, 19hrs and
9 mins we achieved that feat when we landed in Antigua from La Gomera. However during the row, when we were in the middle of the
Atlantic with no land in sight for thousands of miles, we came across a horrendous amount of plastic pollution, from milk jugs to plastic
rope and boxes. Before the row we didn’t quite understand the scale of this plastic problem but after speaking to Marine biologists and
friends about it, we realised just how pervasive this crisis is. A Marine Biologist friend told us that the main cause of ocean plastic
comes from rivers around the world, but this wasn’t widely known. Since we saw the problem first hand we wanted to raise awareness
of this issue more by doing the only thing we know how – by undertaking an audacious rowing challenge. So 3 of the Atlantic rowers
have teamed up with a marine biologist and an engineer to row the entire 1800mile length of the Mississippi river in support of the
charity Plastic Oceans. Along the way we will be taking simple water samples of the river as we transect down in order to provide
scientific and general public awareness of the plastic problem.
The Goal: Mavericks were assembled with two goals in mind;
Raise £30,000 for Plastic Oceans

Our Charity
We all know Plastic Pollution is a global systemic
issues that needs drastic action.
It is not widely known is that most of the plastic in the
oceans comes from rivers. That's why we have
partnered up with Plastic Oceans who have been
global experts on plastic pollution for a decade.
The money we raise for Plastic Oceans will enable
them to engage in education, scientific research and
sustainability initiatives in line with their strategy.

and clear up some of the appalling damage
we have made to the ocean … and that is
going to require positive action”

Track Record
Atlantic Ocean Row
Dec 2018 – Jan 2019
Three out of the five mavericks recently undertook the 3,000 mile
ocean row: in January 2019, Matt, Nick and Rory rowed across
the Atlantic from La Gomera to Antigua, earning a Guinness
World Record for being ‘The fastest Mid- Atlantic ocean row by a
team of 5’.
Not only did the they successfully finish their transatlantic row in
36 days, but they did so by overcoming numerous technical
setbacks and hardship such as extreme fatigue and huger, to
name but a few
Furthermore, the team raised £120,000 worth of corporate
sponsorship to cover the cost of their initial transatlantic row, with
an additional sum of £40,292 going to the charity ‘Cancer
Research’.
