11. What’s to Come
GU ID ED PATH WAYS FOC U S TO H ELP STU D EN TS SU C C EED
To give some context for Emsi’s relationship with higher education–we’ve partnered with hundreds of institutions over the last 15 years. And 3 out of the 4 Aspen Prize winners have been our clients. And last year alone, 1.2 M students used Career Coach to help them with their career goal
We’ve developed what is now the industry standard dataset for labor market information–which informs and supports all that we do.
Our teams of economists and data scientists work to make our data accessible and actionable for colleges.
We’re backed by CareerBuilder–our parent company–and their network of 40,000 businesses.
At Emsi, our goal is to leverage these things to help each student on your campus know why they’re in school and which outcome they’re pursuing.
The next thing I wanted to touch on is the significance, of Emsi data, which is the foundation of all that we do for all of our products.
Emsi’s labor market data set covers more that 99% of the workforce, and is available at the national, state, county and zip code levels.
In total, our labor market dataset is compiled of nearly 100 sources which includes industry, occupation, program, skills, job postings and demographics data.
Once these sources are collected, our team of data scientists use algorithms to remove suppressions and provide estimates for gaps in the Labor Market Data. And also, Emsi data is updated on a quarterly basis.
Switching gears a little bit… I wanted to talk about the student.
The number one reason students attend college today is to get a better job.
––––––––––––––––––––––
The research is from UCLA's Cooperative Institutional Research Program – Annual Freshman Survey
We use the data to represent broad sentiment of first-time, full-time college freshman. Primarily baccalaureate students, but shows the general trend among all students.
“This college's graduates get good jobs” – is also growing but was recorded through a separate survey question.
Which this goes back to Emsi’s goal to help each student on your campus know why they’re in school and which outcome they’re pursuing.
When a student is engaged in their education, it helps with you as a college tremendously.
Enrollment...a motivated and encouraged student with a promising career in mind is more likely to enroll in the programs you offer that will meet their career needs.
Retention…those motivated students who understand the value of their education, are more likely to stay in school.
And lastly, it helps with completion. Similarl to retention, a student that has a career goal in mind, a career vision, is more motivated to complete their program to reach that goal.

Now that we’ve looked at the tool, I wanted to give a couple examples of how some colleges are using the tool and their success stories with Career Coach.
So again, helping the student find their career vision, and directing them toward a program that will help them achieve that goal
Addition feature and another way to use career coach effectively
Again, give the student the goal to work towards, and helping students maintain that career vision.
Back in March, we started a Project with the Chancellors Office of California.
This was a special project for the largest community college system in the US to fulfil the objectives of the EPI.
Career Coach’s role was to help give students a clear career vision, and goal as the first step in their journey through the California Community College system.
Lastly, I wanted to talk a little bit about what’s to come in the near future for Career Coach.
At Emsi we are continuously making improvements to Career Coach and our next iteration will include a fresh new look and feel, a better visual and organization of the labor market data and focuses on some of the main principals in the Guided Pathway model.
The goal of guided pathways for Career Coach is to create an even easier way to help students find a suitable career, and the appropriate path to lead them to a program that will reach student success.
To do this we are simplifying the structure of programs and occupations by leading students to a broad category (ie. Careers = Career Categories / Programs = meta-majors) which will ultimately help them navigate to a specific field of study or career.
With the use of Guided Pathways, students will be able to navigate through Career Coach more effectively, centralize their career focus, and discover their career goal on a much clearer, informed path.
