Bio 139 was a tough course, I wish i could have dedicated my self to it more. Professor Shearer was very engaging and applied his
knowledge to the world in interesting ways. Overall he was one of the best teachers i have had. I have never been more proud to get a
grade of C in my life.
All hail King Joe!! Professor Shearer is the coolest/weirdest Professor ever, and his class is no joke. You will learn and you will learn a lot
in his class. He is one of the best instructors I've had so far and although I never want to be in his class again, I wouldn't be to mad if I
was. Welp I guess I'd better get studying!! :-)
Although this is a rough class and a rough teacher, with that being said he is fair with everyone and he tries to ensure success with
students and tries not to let you fail in the class
BIO 135 was the hardest class I have taken at Gateway, but King Joe made it fun and challenging. He is very knowledgeable in the subject
and explains things clearly while using real life examples. This is not a class you can procrastinate by any means, but if you study the
material and follow the syllabus, you will pass the class. I recommend not missing any classes because there is so much material
discussed in each session and he provides information on the main points you should be studying. I feel like this class will prepare you for
any college course. Go to his college success seminar and use his techniques to studying and being a successful student. He goes over
every test with each individual student to show you exactly where you’re at and where you need to be to get your desired grade. He is
there to provide you with excellent education, so take advantage.
Biology is a subject I could care less about, it is a lot of information that needs to be processed by the brain in a short amount of time. I am
fighting hard for a "B", not on Mr. Shearer lack of doing his job, but on mine for the lack of the ability to retain information, a sign of old age
I take it, but JOE is teaching it simplified without degrading the subject, school or his teaching ability. It is a hard subject, just as I am sure it
is hard to teach a subject that is not known by many students.
Let me say this, as a 48 year old grown man who has been in the work force for over thirty years, Joe Shearer is a positive to your
school and the students lives he touches. He goes out of his way to see both succeed with his HARD WORK AND DEDICATION. KCTCS
should use him as a roll model and example of what a great teacher should be. He truly cares for his students. One of the best I have ever
had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool teacher, but he should give at least some credit for late work.
Gateway students are fortunate to have an instructor like King Joe. He is very passionate about what he teaches. He encourages students
to get involved in their student community and will not hesitate to look silly if it means that students will become engaged in the world
around them.
Great instructor, keeps everyone engaged and makes it as fun as possible while still learning
He has been an awesome professor. I would definitely take another one of his classes and recommend other students to take him as well.
This class is hard, and Shearer knows it too. He gives busy work, which helps your grade if you do it all. He does his best to tell you what
you need to do to maintain or bring up your grade. I was scared coming into this class, but he made it feel like it was any other class. I
LOVE KING JOE!!! And thank you!
He is a great teacher who obviously cares a lot about his students. He is very good about making sure you know how you are doing in
class, what your grade is, and encourages you along the way. A lot of time and effort has been put into this class to make sure that we
succeed like pictures of the lab models and narrated powerpoints posted on blackboard.
He is a great teacher. The only thing I disliked about his class was test would be over packet(s) of notes and no review. So studying was
really difficult because I would study and think I would get an awesome grade but I wouldn't because I would remember the wrong things
and forget the things I needed to remember just because it was so much to remember and to study. I cannot personally take all my time to
study for this one class I have other classes I have to maintain and my home life and daughter. I think he should either give test more often
that wouldn't take an entire class to take the test or he should give a review for the longer test. I also dislike that after the test we only got
the answers back not the questions that were asked so we couldn't really see what we got wrong and needed to study more about. He did
go over and beyond trying to teach us during lecture trying to make it stick whether he made a joke or something he tried really hard to
make sure we understood what he was talking about. Over all he is a great teacher and person.
I enjoyed this class and feel I learned a lot. I wished it was at alittle slower pace at times because it was a lot of info to take in and a lot of
memorization but overall the instructor did great explain things so that I could understand and I liked his method of teaching and not
overloaded with homework!
I love how challenging the class is, the instructor did a great job in making sure his students understand the content discussed. The
amount of time put into studying outside of class directly corresponds with the grade you have in the class. Anatomy and Physiology is not
meant to be easy, that is why I choose this professor here at Gateway and not at another community college.
I thought that my instructor was a very good instructor. While he was one of the harder teachers that I had, I respect him for that and he
has pushed me into studying harder. I really enjoyed his class and his teaching style.
I went into this class scared because I heard that it was hard. Mr. Shearer is an amazing teacher and I never have ever had class like this

at Gateway. He makes the class challenging but I mean he wants you to learn. This semester I have learned so much. He helps you out
and doesn't just surprise you on tests, he always tells you what concepts and some of the bonuses that would be on them. People who
don't do the weekly assignments will of course have a lower grade. You can get a decent grade in the class by doing the weekly
assignment, but unfortunately some people are just lazy. I have not missed one assignment in his class. Like I said before, he is an
amazing teacher and I wish he taught more science classes at Gateway!
I'm not going to lie, this class is very hard. I took this class thinking that with my prior 8 years as an EMT that I would be able to pass this
class with flying colors. I worked so hard to pass this class, and I felt accomplished at the end of the semester. My advice for anyone
taking this class is to make sure you do your BUSY WORK!!! Seriously, I would spend hours on my weekly assignments and labs and the
pay off of the knowledge you receive from your researches and lectures. The weekly assignments will help you to fill in the gaps of the
lecture and give you a better understanding of the complete picture of which ever subject you are on. King Joe is an amazing teacher and
this class made me want to change my major and follow my dreams.
If I had to take this class again it would be with King Joe for sure. He made learning fun and easy. Even though I'm not doing as well as I
planned. This course is not as easy as I thought.
It was a fun course I wish we had more time on tests but other than that. Everything was well explained. You can ask questions. Very
relaxed. Very organized teacher is great he cares about the students.
Joe is an awesome instructor that has a great way of making the students understand the concepts. I really enjoyed how he taught and
introduced new material while connecting it to the real world. He has the best interest of his students in mind and can tell that he really
wants us to succeed in nursing. He focuses on big topics that will covered and used in the nursing program as well as real life after
graduation. I would recommend his class to anyone that wants to be successful in the medical field in the future.
King Joe has definitely topped my ratings of all my pervious professors. He makes this class interesting and fun and I enjoyed being in his
class. He pushed me this semester, even when I wasn't at my best or didn't do my best he pushed me and had faith in me to do what I
needed to do for the class. Couldn't have asked for a better teacher! I will miss having him, wish he could follow us all and teach us
through the entire program!!
King Joe is a great instructor. He explains everything as clearly as he can and if you are confused about something he would be more than
happy to help you. He may be tough but he wants to see his students succeed in his class not fail. Make sure you do all of the weekly
assignments. It really does affect your grade!! He really knows what he is talking about. Just make sure you do all of the assignments and
really study and you will be fine!
King Joe is amazing! I loved having Dr. Fritz for A&P1 but I think that KJ could have made that class a bit more understandable for me
personally. The class conversations were always informative if not even a bit funny, which helped certain concepts stick. I now can look at
myself and be confident moving forward that my teachers are not smarter than me, only educated first.
King Joe is an amazing professor. He is really passionate about seeing his students succeed. I enjoyed his so very much. I feel as if I
learned and retained a lot more that I had ever expected. I'm glad that I took his class instead of deciding just to quit without my associates
degree.
King Joe you rockIIIYou are an outstanding instructor and I very much enjoyed your course!!!
Mr Shearer was one of the toughest instructors I have ever had. He was tough but fair. He was always available to help you in any way he
could. Bio 135 was not an easy subject, but he made his lectures so that there were small breaks when explaining the subject matter, this
gave you a chance to relax before going forward. He gave you plenty of chances for extra credit in order to boost your grade. He is an
instructor that care and wants you to pass, and will do everything in his power to help you do so.
My opinion of this class is hard but the instructor helps you through, that is what makes you work hard and get through it.
Mr. Shearer does an excellent job at presenting the information the class needs to know for assignments and tests. He is very clear on
important concepts and relates those concepts to practical experience. It's very inspiring to have an instructor who is so passionate about
teaching.
Mr. Shearer has assisted in preparing me to be successful as a nurse. The time he takes to go over concepts and to apply them in a
relative way makes learning easier. He takes time with his students and is very passionate about teaching and ensuring students are
successful.
Mr. Shearer is an outstanding instructor. He is very tough, and will tell you that from the beginning, but it helps you work harder and master
the content that is given to you. Go to lecture and lab, and ask questions to help you better understand, and you will do fine.
Mr. Shearer was a great teacher. he helped you out if you needed help with anything in class. He was great at making things clear in his
lectures and related things to the outside world. i would recommend him for anyone having to take BIO 135 or any other science class.
Mr. Shearer, is truly concerned about his students success in his class. He makes his class interesting and entertaining. I looked forward to
going to Mr. Shearer's class, because he is passionate about what he does and very good at it as well.
I would have liked to have had the option of taking BIO 139, three days a week because the material is difficult to understand at times. It
would have been extremely beneficial to have had tutoring for BIO 139. It was offered on Monday only and the time it was offered on
Monday the six of us who would have gone to tutoring, had another class during the time it was offered. I feel like tutoring for BIO 139 is
essential and critical to doing well in this class. I feel like my grade was negatively impacted by not having the flexibility or availability of a
tutor. Friday is always a great day to offer tutoring because many students, like myself, don't have class on Friday.
Professor Joe Shearer, King Joe, to most of his students, reflects the values and ethics of the perfect professor. He is intelligent,
passionate, and possesses a degree of care and concern for his student's success that I have encountered in few professors, even at a

traditional four year institution. I cannot say enough about the effort, time, and energy that this professor invests in his students learning on
a daily basis. Prof. Shearer's class is fun, engaging, and challenging and is designed to fully prepare you for the next level. In addition, I
know based on my involvement on campus that Prof. Shearer is involved in many campus organizations, including piloting S.T.E.M. club!
Professor Shearer is truly an amazing teacher and person and any student who has the pleasure of taking him is very lucky.
Really enjoyed the class. I learned a lot. The only thing I disliked about the class was how side tract the instructor got.
The course had exceeded my expectations. The material was very challenging, but Mr. Shearer explained the material that made it
understandable. He made the class fun and interesting. I can honestly say that in all my years of attending colleges, he is by far my
favorite professor. I could not imagine taking such on such a demanding subject with another professor.
The course is hard. The teacher is cool. If you stay focus on the class work you can get through the class with a good grade. If you slack
off and miss a lot of class and think it is a joke. You will FAIL no doubt about it.
The course is very difficult, however, the instructor made it enjoyable while making it understandable at the same time.
This class is not easy unless you make it easy! You will need to keep up with readings and study often to pass this class. Mr.Shearer is a
great teacher he is engaged with the students learning in his classes! He makes handouts that follow lecture/power points and also
narrates them to retain the knowledge in your memory. Also he has a amazing Facebook page called King Joe's Science Page that helps a
lot with his lab test. Mr.Shearer posts many picture of the models in the classroom to study off of and it is truly helpful. So I would
encourage students to take advantage of the resources and study study study.
This class was challenging, but if you put in the studying and go to all the classes, you shouldnt have a problem passing. Do your weekly
assignments. They have an impact on your grade in the end. Tests were hard, it covered a lot of material.Overall great class.
This class was more challenging then I had originally expected. I was challenged. Mr Shearer made this an interesting class and is
definitely passionate about teaching.
This course is very helpful, King Joe is not only a great person but a great instructor. He clearly defines points giving in class, and does
ALL HE CAN to see you succeed. That is all you can ask for from an instructor/teacher, someone that is genuine about how they feel and
about seeing you succeed, Class could be challenging if not studying and applying your self. Overall, class was very beneficial and i
definitely recommend doing all you can to get in BIO 135 if you need this class. Great experience and learned a lot that i will use in my
future endeavors.
This course sucked because it covered everything in a short time and it was just hard to remember everything. King Joe made it as
painless as humanly possible and it actually was pretty fun even though the course was hard. He was very helpful and explained
everything very clearly and in detail. I hope I have him as a teacher again with my other anatomy/health science classes.
This has been probably one of the hardest yet best courses I have taken to date. The material is in depth and hard as it should be for the
course but completely retain able. The tests are hard and really make you think differently with Professor Shearers style of teaching but
you are provided all the tools and help if you really want to pass and do well. If you want an A you are GOING to earn it but thats how it
should be. The atmosphere in the class is fun and laid back but you retain and learn a lot which is a hard combination to find. Shearer is
one of a kind for sure and Gateway is lucky to have him. I would recommend his class to anyone as long as they want to work, earn it, and
are there to learn and not just get by. By far one of my favorite classes in my time at Gateway.
This was one of the most challenging and enriching courses I have taken at the college level. This course was what I consider "the real
deal" in that if you can succeed in this course, you should be equipped to handle future courses of equal or greater difficulty. Success was
not impossible in this ,however. Prof. Shearer provides the necessary information and resources to get the most out of this course. He
keeps the pace of the material appropriate, and has a good sense of the things that you need to know. You'll feel like you actually got
something out of the course. Prof. Shearer genuinely wants everyone in the class to do well, but it is ultimately up to the student to make
that happen. No "hand holding" in this class. Grades are earned, yet he makes himself available and seems to go to great lengths to
provide additional resources outside of the classroom, as in the case of his Facebook science page. There's a genuine passion in his
lectures and my night course seems to fly by even though it is almost 3 hours long. He will joke and be friendly, but it isn't all fun and
games. When it comes to the content of the course, he takes it seriously, and has a knack for making difficult A&P concepts easier to
understand. At times you'll feel overwhelmed, but it all seems to flow and come together at the right time. This course is an asset to the
science program at Gateway and an asset to anyone pursuing a career in the health or biology fields.

  • 6. Instructor profile 05/29/2015 Class Climate evaluation Page 5 Comments ReportComments Report 5. Comments5. Comments Please provide comments about the instructor or course.5.1) Bio 139 was a tough course, I wish i could have dedicated my self to it more. Professor Shearer was very engaging and applied his knowledge to the world in interesting ways. Overall he was one of the best teachers i have had. I have never been more proud to get a grade of C in my life. All hail King Joe!! Professor Shearer is the coolest/weirdest Professor ever, and his class is no joke. You will learn and you will learn a lot in his class. He is one of the best instructors I've had so far and although I never want to be in his class again, I wouldn't be to mad if I was. Welp I guess I'd better get studying!! :-) Although this is a rough class and a rough teacher, with that being said he is fair with everyone and he tries to ensure success with students and tries not to let you fail in the class BIO 135 was the hardest class I have taken at Gateway, but King Joe made it fun and challenging. He is very knowledgeable in the subject and explains things clearly while using real life examples. This is not a class you can procrastinate by any means, but if you study the material and follow the syllabus, you will pass the class. I recommend not missing any classes because there is so much material discussed in each session and he provides information on the main points you should be studying. I feel like this class will prepare you for any college course. Go to his college success seminar and use his techniques to studying and being a successful student. He goes over every test with each individual student to show you exactly where you’re at and where you need to be to get your desired grade. He is there to provide you with excellent education, so take advantage. Biology is a subject I could care less about, it is a lot of information that needs to be processed by the brain in a short amount of time. I am fighting hard for a "B", not on Mr. Shearer lack of doing his job, but on mine for the lack of the ability to retain information, a sign of old age I take it, but JOE is teaching it simplified without degrading the subject, school or his teaching ability. It is a hard subject, just as I am sure it is hard to teach a subject that is not known by many students. Let me say this, as a 48 year old grown man who has been in the work force for over thirty years, Joe Shearer is a positive to your school and the students lives he touches. He goes out of his way to see both succeed with his HARD WORK AND DEDICATION. KCTCS should use him as a roll model and example of what a great teacher should be. He truly cares for his students. One of the best I have ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cool teacher, but he should give at least some credit for late work. Gateway students are fortunate to have an instructor like King Joe. He is very passionate about what he teaches. He encourages students to get involved in their student community and will not hesitate to look silly if it means that students will become engaged in the world around them. Great instructor, keeps everyone engaged and makes it as fun as possible while still learning He has been an awesome professor. I would definitely take another one of his classes and recommend other students to take him as well. This class is hard, and Shearer knows it too. He gives busy work, which helps your grade if you do it all. He does his best to tell you what you need to do to maintain or bring up your grade. I was scared coming into this class, but he made it feel like it was any other class. I LOVE KING JOE!!! And thank you! He is a great teacher who obviously cares a lot about his students. He is very good about making sure you know how you are doing in class, what your grade is, and encourages you along the way. A lot of time and effort has been put into this class to make sure that we succeed like pictures of the lab models and narrated powerpoints posted on blackboard. He is a great teacher. The only thing I disliked about his class was test would be over packet(s) of notes and no review. So studying was really difficult because I would study and think I would get an awesome grade but I wouldn't because I would remember the wrong things and forget the things I needed to remember just because it was so much to remember and to study. I cannot personally take all my time to study for this one class I have other classes I have to maintain and my home life and daughter. I think he should either give test more often that wouldn't take an entire class to take the test or he should give a review for the longer test. I also dislike that after the test we only got the answers back not the questions that were asked so we couldn't really see what we got wrong and needed to study more about. He did go over and beyond trying to teach us during lecture trying to make it stick whether he made a joke or something he tried really hard to make sure we understood what he was talking about. Over all he is a great teacher and person. I enjoyed this class and feel I learned a lot. I wished it was at alittle slower pace at times because it was a lot of info to take in and a lot of memorization but overall the instructor did great explain things so that I could understand and I liked his method of teaching and not overloaded with homework! I love how challenging the class is, the instructor did a great job in making sure his students understand the content discussed. The amount of time put into studying outside of class directly corresponds with the grade you have in the class. Anatomy and Physiology is not meant to be easy, that is why I choose this professor here at Gateway and not at another community college. I thought that my instructor was a very good instructor. While he was one of the harder teachers that I had, I respect him for that and he has pushed me into studying harder. I really enjoyed his class and his teaching style. I went into this class scared because I heard that it was hard. Mr. Shearer is an amazing teacher and I never have ever had class like this
  • 7. Instructor profile 05/29/2015 Class Climate evaluation Page 6 at Gateway. He makes the class challenging but I mean he wants you to learn. This semester I have learned so much. He helps you out and doesn't just surprise you on tests, he always tells you what concepts and some of the bonuses that would be on them. People who don't do the weekly assignments will of course have a lower grade. You can get a decent grade in the class by doing the weekly assignment, but unfortunately some people are just lazy. I have not missed one assignment in his class. Like I said before, he is an amazing teacher and I wish he taught more science classes at Gateway! I'm not going to lie, this class is very hard. I took this class thinking that with my prior 8 years as an EMT that I would be able to pass this class with flying colors. I worked so hard to pass this class, and I felt accomplished at the end of the semester. My advice for anyone taking this class is to make sure you do your BUSY WORK!!! Seriously, I would spend hours on my weekly assignments and labs and the pay off of the knowledge you receive from your researches and lectures. The weekly assignments will help you to fill in the gaps of the lecture and give you a better understanding of the complete picture of which ever subject you are on. King Joe is an amazing teacher and this class made me want to change my major and follow my dreams. If I had to take this class again it would be with King Joe for sure. He made learning fun and easy. Even though I'm not doing as well as I planned. This course is not as easy as I thought. It was a fun course I wish we had more time on tests but other than that. Everything was well explained. You can ask questions. Very relaxed. Very organized teacher is great he cares about the students. Joe is an awesome instructor that has a great way of making the students understand the concepts. I really enjoyed how he taught and introduced new material while connecting it to the real world. He has the best interest of his students in mind and can tell that he really wants us to succeed in nursing. He focuses on big topics that will covered and used in the nursing program as well as real life after graduation. I would recommend his class to anyone that wants to be successful in the medical field in the future. King Joe has definitely topped my ratings of all my pervious professors. He makes this class interesting and fun and I enjoyed being in his class. He pushed me this semester, even when I wasn't at my best or didn't do my best he pushed me and had faith in me to do what I needed to do for the class. Couldn't have asked for a better teacher! I will miss having him, wish he could follow us all and teach us through the entire program!! King Joe is a great instructor. He explains everything as clearly as he can and if you are confused about something he would be more than happy to help you. He may be tough but he wants to see his students succeed in his class not fail. Make sure you do all of the weekly assignments. It really does affect your grade!! He really knows what he is talking about. Just make sure you do all of the assignments and really study and you will be fine! King Joe is amazing! I loved having Dr. Fritz for A&P1 but I think that KJ could have made that class a bit more understandable for me personally. The class conversations were always informative if not even a bit funny, which helped certain concepts stick. I now can look at myself and be confident moving forward that my teachers are not smarter than me, only educated first. King Joe is an amazing professor. He is really passionate about seeing his students succeed. I enjoyed his so very much. I feel as if I learned and retained a lot more that I had ever expected. I'm glad that I took his class instead of deciding just to quit without my associates degree. King Joe you rockIIIYou are an outstanding instructor and I very much enjoyed your course!!! Mr Shearer was one of the toughest instructors I have ever had. He was tough but fair. He was always available to help you in any way he could. Bio 135 was not an easy subject, but he made his lectures so that there were small breaks when explaining the subject matter, this gave you a chance to relax before going forward. He gave you plenty of chances for extra credit in order to boost your grade. He is an instructor that care and wants you to pass, and will do everything in his power to help you do so. My opinion of this class is hard but the instructor helps you through, that is what makes you work hard and get through it. Mr. Shearer does an excellent job at presenting the information the class needs to know for assignments and tests. He is very clear on important concepts and relates those concepts to practical experience. It's very inspiring to have an instructor who is so passionate about teaching. Mr. Shearer has assisted in preparing me to be successful as a nurse. The time he takes to go over concepts and to apply them in a relative way makes learning easier. He takes time with his students and is very passionate about teaching and ensuring students are successful. Mr. Shearer is an outstanding instructor. He is very tough, and will tell you that from the beginning, but it helps you work harder and master the content that is given to you. Go to lecture and lab, and ask questions to help you better understand, and you will do fine. Mr. Shearer was a great teacher. he helped you out if you needed help with anything in class. He was great at making things clear in his lectures and related things to the outside world. i would recommend him for anyone having to take BIO 135 or any other science class. Mr. Shearer, is truly concerned about his students success in his class. He makes his class interesting and entertaining. I looked forward to going to Mr. Shearer's class, because he is passionate about what he does and very good at it as well. I would have liked to have had the option of taking BIO 139, three days a week because the material is difficult to understand at times. It would have been extremely beneficial to have had tutoring for BIO 139. It was offered on Monday only and the time it was offered on Monday the six of us who would have gone to tutoring, had another class during the time it was offered. I feel like tutoring for BIO 139 is essential and critical to doing well in this class. I feel like my grade was negatively impacted by not having the flexibility or availability of a tutor. Friday is always a great day to offer tutoring because many students, like myself, don't have class on Friday. Professor Joe Shearer, King Joe, to most of his students, reflects the values and ethics of the perfect professor. He is intelligent, passionate, and possesses a degree of care and concern for his student's success that I have encountered in few professors, even at a
  • 8. Instructor profile 05/29/2015 Class Climate evaluation Page 7 traditional four year institution. I cannot say enough about the effort, time, and energy that this professor invests in his students learning on a daily basis. Prof. Shearer's class is fun, engaging, and challenging and is designed to fully prepare you for the next level. In addition, I know based on my involvement on campus that Prof. Shearer explained the material that made it understandable. He made the class fun and interesting. I can honestly say that in all my years of attending colleges, he is by far my favorite professor. I could not imagine taking such on such a demanding subject with another professor. The course is hard. The teacher is cool. If you stay focus on the class work you can get through the class with a good grade. If you slack off and miss a lot of class and think it is a joke. You will FAIL no doubt about it. The course is very difficult, however, the instructor made it enjoyable while making it understandable at the same time. This class is not easy unless you make it easy! You will need to keep up with readings and study often to pass this class. Mr.Shearer is a great teacher he is engaged with the students learning in his classes! He makes handouts that follow lecture/power points and also narrates them to retain the knowledge in your memory. Also he has a amazing Facebook page called King Joe's Science Page that helps a lot with his lab test. Mr.Shearer posts many picture of the models in the classroom to study off of and it is truly helpful. So I would encourage students to take advantage of the resources and study study study. This class was challenging, but if you put in the studying and go to all the classes, you shouldnt have a problem passing. Do your weekly assignments. They have an impact on your grade in the end. Tests were hard, it covered a lot of material.Overall great class. This class was more challenging then I had originally expected. I was challenged. Mr Shearer made this an interesting class and is definitely passionate about teaching. This course is very helpful, King Joe is not only a great person but a great instructor. He clearly defines points giving in class, and does ALL HE CAN to see you succeed. That is all you can ask for from an instructor/teacher, someone that is genuine about how they feel and about seeing you succeed, Class could be challenging if not studying and applying your self. Overall, class was very beneficial and i definitely recommend doing all you can to get in BIO 135 if you need this class. Great experience and learned a lot that i will use in my future endeavors. This course sucked because it covered everything in a short time and it was just hard to remember everything. King Joe made it as painless as humanly possible and it actually was pretty fun even though the course was hard. He was very helpful and explained everything very clearly and in detail. I hope I have him as a teacher again with my other anatomy/health science classes. This has been probably one of the hardest yet best courses I have taken to date. The material is in depth and hard as it should be for the course but completely retain able. The tests are hard and really make you think differently with Professor Shearers style of teaching but you are provided all the tools and help if you really want to pass and do well. If you want an A you are GOING to earn it but thats how it should be. The atmosphere in the class is fun and laid back but you retain and learn a lot which is a hard combination to find. Shearer is one of a kind for sure and Gateway is lucky to have him. I would recommend his class to anyone as long as they want to work, earn it, and are there to learn and not just get by. By far one of my favorite classes in my time at Gateway. This was one of the most challenging and enriching courses I have taken at the college level. This course was what I consider "the real deal" in that if you can succeed in this course, you should be equipped to handle future courses of equal or greater difficulty. Success was not impossible in this ,however. Prof. Shearer provides the necessary information and resources to get the most out of this course. He keeps the pace of the material appropriate, and has a good sense of the things that you need to know. You'll feel like you actually got something out of the course. Prof. Shearer genuinely wants everyone in the class to do well, but it is ultimately up to the student to make that happen. No "hand holding" in this class. Grades are earned, yet he makes himself available and seems to go to great lengths to provide additional resources outside of the classroom, as in the case of his Facebook science page. There's a genuine passion in his lectures and my night course seems to fly by even though it is almost 3 hours long. He will joke and be friendly, but it isn't all fun and games. When it comes to the content of the course, he takes it seriously, and has a knack for making difficult A&P concepts easier to understand. At times you'll feel overwhelmed, but it all seems to flow and come together at the right time. This course is an asset to the science program at Gateway and an asset to anyone pursuing a career in the health or biology fields.
