2. Recumbent
Anubis
• Description- created 664-30
B.C., Ptolemaic Period, it is
made of limestone and
measures 64 cm in length.
• Analysis- The work is notable
for its high level of detail and
the naturalistic depiction of
the god's form, including his
musculature.
• Interpretation- Interesting how
to many it may just seem like
an image of a dog but to
Ancient Egypt it represents the
God Anubis
• Evaluation- Simple but I like it
because It looks like a lot of
effort was put into carving out
the sculpture
3. Terracotta Plaque
• Description- 450-460 BCE, made
of terracotta, a type of fired clay,
and features a relief design on one
side.
• Analysis- The engraving and
vibrant color bring out the forms
of Odyssey, Penelope, and others,
etc.
• Interpretation- Greek mythology
• Evaluation- Great piece of artwork
displaying the return of Odyssey
to his native Ithaka
4. Book of the Dead of the Priest
of Horus, Imhotep (Imuthes)
Description- ca. 332-200 B.C., made up of papyrus and ink, and measures 21.9 meters in length
Analysis- the many pictures along the border represents spells
Interpretation- scripture written to help ensure Imhotep’s safety and well-being in the realm of the
dead.
Evaluation- this is the original scripture written in hieratic, this is a great piece of art as it shows
the religious/culture of ancient Egypt.
5. Allegory of the
Catholic Faith
• Description-ca. 1670-72, oil on canvas, depicts
the triumph of the Catholic Church at a moment
when public celebrations of the Mass were
forbidden in the Dutch Republic.
• Analysis- you can tell a lot of work was put into
this art piece and the artist did a perfect job
with the contrast of colors.
• Interpretation-The expression of the woman
shows a sign of relief even when a mass was
forbidden.
• Evaluation- The change from bright colors and
dark colors really make the image look 3D. The
bright colors make it look like the curtains,
woman, and the cross, etc are popping out.
