1. T
his August, RSES Journal posted an interesting study on
gender awareness as it relates to thermostats onto our
social media outlets. The article, which originally ran
in WIRED, must have struck a chord because we received a
plethora of responses from the post. While the level of in-
teraction on our feeds made me proud, I was disheartened to
learn that many of the responses came from individuals who
are not Members of RSES.
Sadly, this has become a common trend, as only a few
of you have adopted social media since I have taken on the
role as Associate Editor at RSES Journal. We have tried to
become more active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and
LinkedIn, but it appears very few people have engaged with
us. As a journalist and a Millennial, I can’t stress how impor-
tant the role of technology is in making any business, or an
organization like RSES, successful.
A few decades ago it was possible to thrive outside of the
Internet, but no longer. We live in a society connected by cell
phones, laptops and multiple social media outlets. Not having
an online presence cuts you off from many of the people you
are trying to reach in your business. That is not to say that
not having a cell phone or a Facebook account is a bad thing,
but not having one is now considered bad for business.
For those of you that have not joined us online, I have
come to tell you that it is a very easy process. Simply sign
up at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn for a free
account. If you have any kind of smartphone you are already
half-way there; all you need to do is load the apps (all free) from
your phone and you can be connected to us within minutes.
RSES Journal uses these outlets to present up-to-date and
sometimes up-to-the-minute information about the HVACR
industry and the Society. As in previous years RSES Journal
will be on hand at the 78th
Annual RSES Conference and
HVACR Technology Expo in Rosemont, IL this month,
covering everything from industry tours to the Battle of the
Regions. Our coverage will be posted on our social media
networks within 24 hours so you can stay abreast of the latest
news whether you are onsite or in a different country.
The conversation will begin on Sept. 30, so be sure to
follow us @RSESHQ on Twitter and become part of the
#RSESConference discussion. “Like” the Refrigeration Service
Engineers Society on Facebook for Conference updates and
pictures as well. Conference attendees are also being asked to
share their experiences on our social media sites. Help us get
to the word out about the great training resources available
through RSES by sharing your thoughts on the Conference.
As always, I look forward to talking to each of you at the
Conference to find out more about what you would like to see
in the magazine. Please feel free to let me know how we can
make RSES Journal better for you, both in print and online.
