ast month, RSES held its 78th
Annual Conference &
HVACR Technology Expo in Rosemont, IL and, as a
manager of social media within the Association, it was
a very interesting experience. As some of you may recall, in
my last column, I mentioned a lack of social media interaction
within our organization. It seems that some of you have been
paying attention. While not everyone has fully embraced the
concept of social media, some of you in the organization are
making an effort and that needs to be applauded.
At the event, I saw many of you on your smartphones
taking pictures and even doing video conference calls via
Facetime. Some of you still need a bit of encouragement, but
that’s not a bad thing. It is all about baby steps.
I am happy to report that many of you now have smart-
phones; this is noticeable progress from just a few years
ago. Though most of you took pictures, it seems like a lot
of Members are still not posting them to social media sites.
While it is true that smartphones take much better pictures
than the average camera, they also have the ability to post
those photos instantly to a variety of social media outlets.
What better way to inform your customers and fellow RSES
Members that you are on top of the latest educational trends
than by showing them photos of you in real-time? It is a fan-
tastic way to promote both RSES and your own business.
I was lucky enough to speak one-on-one with a lot of
Members to hear their concerns about social media directly.
For many of you, privacy remains an issue. While I agree
that posting an image or article to social media might allow
people to know where you are, that is the purpose of the
program, to a degree. I myself have two separate Facebook
accounts, one that I use for personal purposes and one I use
just for business. If you are afraid that someone will know
details about you or your family then create an account that
is strictly for business. Photos of you will show that you are a
representative of your business simply doing a good and thor-
ough job promoting the HVACR industry.
It is understandable that there would be some hesitation
in the industry, but social media is well past the early adoption
phase. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and countless
others have become a permanent part of the way businesses
run and acquire new customers. More of the HVACR industry
community needs to embrace such ideas if it is ever going to
evolve and survive the current slump.
The option of simply watching as new technology emerges
no longer makes sense from a business perspective. Everyone
in the HVACR industry should learn to work with the new
tools available or be left behind. In the end, it is a personal
choice but, as someone that has observed the industry for
many years now, a choice that needs to be made soon.
