Master thesis title: "Improvement of antiangiogenic therapies in colorectal cancer"
Brief Synopsis: The high proliferation rate of cancer cells leads to the emergence
of hypoxic areas in tumours. Hypoxic cells trigger angiogenesis, as a way to deal
with the lack of oxygen. Angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and
metastases. Antiangiogenic (AA) therapies consist of blocking proangiogenic
factors, such as VEGF. Unfortunately, patients quickly develop resistance to AA
therapy. The use of drug combinations may overcome resistance to AA drugs and
increase tumor killing. We want to improve the efficacy of AA therapies in CRC
patients, by identifying essential genes for hypoxic cell survival, which can induce
synthetic lethality (in combination with AA drugs).

Brief Synopsis: E. coli is a bacteria that is present in many kinds of food and that
can be harmful to human health. In this project it was tested whether E. coli is
effectively inactivated using high pressure technology. The results of this study can
be used by the food industry to develop new food conservation processes
involving high pressure technology.

Communication skills I am inherently a person who is good in communication and who easily integrates
in new environments. Throughout my life I was able to improve this skills even
more by living on my own abroad for one year, by interacting with different
researchers at the NKI, by representing the biochemistry students in the
pedagogic council of University of Aveiro in my BSc and also as a volunteer in
Erasmus Student Network.
Organisational / managerial
skills
I have very good organisational, managing and leadership skills gained as the
representative of the biochemistry students in the pedagogic council of University
of Aveiro, as a member of the organization committee of the biochemistry students
annual meeting of 2013, as a Board member of Erasmus Student Network Aveiro
and as the main organizer of the Erasmus National Meeting of Portugal.
Job-related skills I am a very motivated, competent, committed and responsible person who easily
integrates in new environments. I am also very hard-working and creative and
throughout my experiences in research I developed many technical skills, which
allowed me to become quite independent in my work.
